Adding Permanent Volume Markings to a kettle

Post by LiverDance » Mon Mar 03, 2014 3:50 pm

Found this one on the interwebz

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I saw this too, but I'll be damned if I can see a damned thing inside my kettle during a rolling boil. The steam coming off it and the hop spider do a good job of blocking any view of the kettle wall.

Wouldn't this remove the chromium oxide layer and make it susceptible to rust?

The Reddit thread where this was initially posted is here

There's a bunch of high-falootin' chemistry talk there, but I think they end up deciding that it's probably not a problem.

Did this tonight. Works great. Little bit of a learning curve, so my lower lines and numbers are not super visible.

It's way easier than it looks. The hardest part is measuring the volumes and marking them because the water interferes with most markers and pens. I used my son's bath crayons to make the marks but if I dipped below the water line it smudged the line and I would have to dry off the crayon and the surface and try again.

I think for the stencils, you would want to get stick on ones because they would give crisper lines. Or just do it in Roman numerals and use electrical tape. i wetted down my stencils so the sort of stuck in place but it wasn't perfect.

Oh and I used my phones camera and light to help with the taping off and etching deep in the pot. That was the only way I could get close enough to see where I was putting the tape. If you have kids with narrow enough shoulders, you could get them to crawl into the pot and tape off the markings.

Take a piece of tape and premark your spots to etch. Then use the tape as your spot in the empty pot to add lines and #.

Like run a piece of electrical tape up the side of the pot and then cut in the marks? that is brilliant Sandy!!!

Lay the tape over the water line and work to the bottom side of the tape.
