2nd Annual Fall River BBQ competition
The Second Annual Fall River BBQ competition Sept 21 2013 at the LWF Community Centre Fall River Road, Fall River Nova Scotia. This year in support of the IWK!
I had a great time there last year . Perhaps there are some Brewnosers with some interest in competing this year? I'm in already.

Re: 2nd Annual Fall River BBQ competition
There's no rules section or real information on there just the date and location. How much is the entrance fee, what do you have to cook/provide. Are there prizes, ect...

Re: 2nd Annual Fall River BBQ competition
More info will come. It's a pretty casual competition. Last year you had to turn in 6 ribs for the judges, 4 or 5 hours to cook, $10 entrance fee. Assume it will be similar this year, raising money for the IWK. Lots of fun.

I'd like to support a brewnosers entry into this, if that made sense...

Fall River BBQ competition coming up
Pat Healey
FALL RIVER: More than 20 entries are expected for the second annual Fall River BBQ fundraiser, scheduled for Sept. 21 at the LWF Community Hall in Fall River.
This year all monies raised at the fundraiser, which takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., will go to the IWK Children’s Health Centre.
The champion from 2012, Roger Williamson, was initially going to step back from competing, as were fellow organizers Shawn Dube, and Rob MacCormick. However, that changed when people spoke to them about the event.
“We have gotten feedback from a number of last year’s competitors and they want a shot at the Champ,” said Williamson.
Recent Dutch Mason Blues Festival BBQ competition winners, Dave and Jennifer Reed of Fall River, will look to create a delish rib dinner, and bring home the title as the Fall River BBQ champions.
Fall River’s Jenn Harrie and Q104 host Bobby Mac will be back as guest judges who will get to taste each entrants BBQ ribs, and then select the best one and who will be the 2013 champion.
Williamson said BBQ meals will be served from the LWF kitchen beginning in the early afternoon, including pulled pork sandwiches and rib dinners. The bar at the hall will be open all day.
He said live music will be playing all afternoon up until Judging time.
“Last year was the most successful BBQ competition in HRM in recent years, which shows the growing interest in BBQ in this region,” said Williamson. “We’re thrilled to do this again this year, and we will be making it bigger and better for not just the competitors but our sponsors and especially for community participation.
“It will be fun for the whole family.”
Not all the information is finalized, including major sponsors who were expected to be announced late last month.

Re: 2nd Annual Fall River BBQ competition
This is coming up next weekend and I hear there are a few spots still open. If you're interested, contact fallriverbbq@gmail.com for an info package. The general idea is load in between 8am and 10am, meat inspection and welcome after that and rib turn in at 4:30pm.
Entry fee is $25 and you get shirt, meal and a drink ticket.
Lots of fun!

Roger Williamson took first overall again this year. He cooks on a Weber Performer and has it down to a science. He's also one of the organisers and quite the character. I'm gunning for him next year!

Interesting fact - equipment used for first, second and third was the same as last year : performer, WSM and WSM. The eggs didn't place. Personally I find my ribs better in the WSM than on my Vision, and maybe that is just more practice on the WSM.

3-2-1 ribs tops in Fall River
3-2-1 ribs tops in Fall River

For the second annual Fall River barbecue competition, there were more competitors and more spectators than last year, but the same winner.
Roger Williamson topped 13 other competitors with his ribs smoked over maple and hickory and glazed with a sauce based on butter, onion, garlic and chipotles.
“I am shocked,” said Williamson, who bought his ribs at Costco. “I gotta tell you, I was very happy with the ribs I turned in, more happy with those ribs than any I’ve turned in in my life. I thought they had the perfect balance of smoke, sweet, heat and juiciness.
“My method is 3-2-1, which is three hours smoking at 225, two hours wrapped in tinfoil and one hour with sauce on. I do something different. I crank it up in the middle. Once they’re wrapped, I crank it up to about 300, and keep it at that for the final three hours. What that does is caramelize that sauce.”
Williamson’s ribs earned the top spot on the ballot of three of the six judges. The proceeds from last year’s event went toward buying a new kitchen for the Lakeview-Windsor Junction-Fall River hall, which hosts the rib contest. This year’s profits will be donated to the IWK Health Centre.
“We need a bigger venue, and it’s a nice problem to have,” said organizer (and competitor) Rob MacCormick. “We’re blown away by the response. I’d love to see this whole competitive cooking thing take off … and to see more of these events.”
Williamson has competed three times at the Dutch Mason Blues Festival rib cook-off in Bible Hill, coming third once. For both his wins at Fall River, he has cooked on a Weber Performer. The smell of fragrant smoke surrounded the LWF for blocks Saturday, and MacCormick, who wants to encourage more first-timers to take part in next year’s event, said people who take their ribs seriously are likely to use a Weber.
“Probably 40 per cent Weber, between kettles and Performers, 25 per cent Green Eggs, and then a hodgepodge. There were some people cooking on propane. I saw a Kingsford offset. But Weber seems to be the easiest thing to work with.”

Re: 2nd Annual Fall River BBQ competition
After chatting with a few brewnosers at the competition, and given my beer and smoke habits, it's probably time I posted on here.
We had an absolute blast on the weekend, and can't wait for next year.
Derek, you did a damn fine job. I thought my ribs turned out great, but I took a bite of yours and my first thought was "damnit!". That boiled down stout sauce that you came up with was incredible, and glazed onto the ribs, oh man...
