torx screws/hard drive stir plate

Post by CorneliusAlphonse » Fri Jan 25, 2013 4:36 pm

trying to open an old maxtor HD to get some magnets for a stir plate, but it's all sealed up with torx screws. anyone have a driver that i could use for 5 minutes at some point? or should i just smash it open with a hammer.. haha

I expect smashing it will be quite difficult, as it is all metal on the outside, but if that is the general consensus, i'll do it. haha

Haha, I wouldn't take our advice on this one.. ;)

I have the tools as well, but I'm a bit out of your way. If you aren't in a rush, I'm thinking of making it into H&T and/or RB tomorrow.

OBK order came in - I have the right size torx for hard drives too if you want to bring it with when you pick up!

Ha, I just did 7 hard drives tonight (yes really).. my shitty off brand torx bit did the job but with some effort. Sounds like you'll be better off using what Jayme has.

I'll be in touch for the pint tomorrow.

alright! i've got myself some magnets now, and a fan, so all i need is a 12V adaptor. anyone have 1 or 2 laying around?

edit: also, for my 5 litre flask, will the puny 80mm fan be enough? should i put the magnet on the hub or try to put it on the blades and balance it? i feel like that might not work well. i don't have a stir bar yet, so i can buy one to suit whatever i do

Put the magnet on the hub. See if you can space the N and S out to match the stir bar. 80mm should be fine.

Can you use a cell phone adapter ?

When you align your magnets on the fan ( I used the hub ) make sure they are centered so they don't wobble.

Also watch your fingers, it will hurt if you get pinched between those magnets. Wish I saw this earlier, I have a bunch of these magnets already harvested.

I think cell phones are usually 5V. But if you dig through all your old wall-warts you can usually find one that's 12V.

I have some more around actually (found them on Saturday), will have a look tonight.

I do have an old desktop power supply (big boxes) that should run the fan?

Found a 12V DC power adapter (wall wart). It is rated at 200 mA, that enough for your fan Liam? If so, it's yours. Can likely get it to you this weekend sometime, unless you 'really' want to trek out to Timberlea.
