Well, that's the problem with competitions! I make beer for myself, and if I have something that looks like it will fit a BJCP category, I'd enter it. Exactly.
Although everything I make will fit one of the styles to a degree. That's one of the reasons I don't score a medal with every entry

Re: Next CABA Competition
Is there a competition in Canada before the end of the year? I have some bottles ready to enter and if there's nothing in Canada I'm going to send them to CASK Virginia Beer Blitz. I might actually send them tomorrow.

Any CABA members on here that can access the forums? Maybe there's some info hidden behind the paywall...

Re: Next CABA Competition
I just searched through my email a bit for my login, then realized I joined Oct 2, so technically my membership expired I guess. I don't know that I'll renew though.. CABA does not seem very well organized, and I really didn't get anything out of being a member as far as I can tell. You would think they'd at least send out a renewal notice!
Anyway, back on topic - there was a competition last year in November was there not? I guess if there's not been an official announcement yet, maybe it's not happening this year.

And the Competition link I posted above shows the Nov 2011 CABA Comp, so you are remembering correctly. Nothing elsewhere on their site, or twitter.

Re: Next CABA Competition
I did get a bit of a discount when entering the last CABA competition, so if you enter a LOT of beer, it could pay for itself there. Also, there is the conference every year - but it's in Ontario, and I'll likely never go. So yeah, for most of us that would conceivably only enter a couple of beers in a competition, not worth it at all. I think there would be a lot more value in joining the AHA - though it is more expensive.

I'm also a CABA member. I had to wait until I got into work this morning since I forgot my password and my browser here remembered it for me. The CABA website is sketchy and hardly maintained. The Brewnosers would do a hell of a lot better job if in charge there!
Just sayin...

Re: Next CABA Competition
Yeah, I joined just to get the discount on entries to last year's All About Ales competition, figuring that if I got nothing else out of membership, it would only have cost me a couple of bucks. And I got nothing else out of it... I do remember getting one email about something of no interest.Jayme wrote:I just searched through my email a bit for my login, then realized I joined Oct 2, so technically my membership expired I guess. I'm a CABA member also and every year they hold a comp with the AGM.
Don't look like this year there will be one.
If they do hold one, it will be a short window to enter with Nov 24th being the AGM.

Re: Next CABA Competition
Once we have some judges in the club, we can start hosting national comps. I know it is a lot of work, but as a club we have pulled off great things, so why not do it for the nation as a whole. If CABA won't do it, so be it. Let them do whatever it is they do. It's just a shame when you think what the AHA has done in the south.

I like the idea of a BrewNosers comp.

Hopefully we can pull something off in 2013 once we potentially have some more judges in the area.

If I remember the whole BJCP judging structure, until our new judges (assuming some pass the exam in the spring) get fully qualified, they need to be doing the stewarding, as it counts towards their graduation to full status.

Re: Next CABA Competition
Sort of. That is the case if you only do the online exam. You can be a recognized judge without any judging experience, but you must have passed your Beer Judging examination (what we are writing in the spring). To become a certified judge you need 5 points of experience, which in theory you could get from two comps (but it depends on size and how much work you do). It would still be a good idea for the master judge to pair up inexperienced judges with experienced judges, but I don't think it is a requirement. This is all from what I have read, in practice someone with some experience might be able to say more about how it really works.derek wrote: If I remember the whole BJCP judging structure, until our new judges (assuming some pass the exam in the spring) get fully qualified, they need to be doing the stewarding, as it counts towards their graduation to full status.
