Re: Meeting Idea
Personally I'd take that to mean anything between 40 and 75, but that's just me.mgc wrote:Me too. What level of crystal is medium 40 or 60?

Re: Meeting Idea
I'd suggest 60 if you've got it, the closest thing you've got if you don't. At 6% of the grain bill, I don't think the difference between 40 & 75 is enough to skew the results. This is about the hops after all.
I like LD's suggested hop bill.
I like LD's suggested hop bill.

change the 30 min to 20 min addition and it's right on what we are shooting for.GAM wrote:Does this look OK.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Re: Meeting Idea
Looks good. I'm guessing you guys are adding the roast barley for a little color?

Re: Meeting Idea
That amount of roasted barley (~0.5%) is negligible. Let's go with ~5% ABV, ~50IBU (60/20min split as per LD), 50g at flame-out, 5% Crystal 60 and 95% 2-row.
Also, I see there are people chiming into this thread, who haven't filled out their names/hop options on the spreadsheet.

Re: Meeting Idea
I'm also assuming that we are all using US-05 or 1056 yeast for this brew?

Re: Meeting Idea
I would think any of the neutral American Ale yeasts would be fine: US-05, 1056, 1272, WLP001, WLP051.

Re: Meeting Idea
When are we aiming to have these brews done and ready for consumption? I can't see myself getting a brew day in until the first weekend in October at the earliest.

Forecast calls for rain for Sunday thru Monday...
so I suppose you could rig up some kind of keggle-unbrella with some duct tape and a bit'o' sweat!

Yes, that's the last piece we need to hammer out. Who's using what? SS in on pg 3 of this thread, if you missed it.hogie wrote:Also, I see there are people chiming into this thread, who haven't filled out their names/hop options on the spreadsheet.

Re: Meeting Idea
A question - if we are adding our hop additions to reach certain IBU levels, then shouldn't we have our brewing software all set to the same algorithm (Tinseth, Rager or Garetz)? Does anyone use anything other than Tinseth?
We could also go by AAU per addition (oz x AA)

Re: Meeting Idea
I like the aau proposition, simply because of the flameout addition. 2 oz of saaz is a whole lot diff than 2 oz of challenger for example.

Re: Meeting Idea
Ok folks, I'm not sure who is driving this bus but it seems some folks would like to brew this weekend (me included). Can we agree on;
Two options;
1) 92% 2 row / 8% 60L
2) 90% 2 row / 8% 60L / 2% Melanoidin
Just because I like using some Mela.. ha
As far as who get's first dibs on hops, that'll be trickier. Though if two people make the same thing, that's fine too I think (just as long as most folks are different). Could go with 'first come first serve' from the spreadsheet. Would be good for folks near the top to highlight / lock in the hops they intend to use so folks farther down can decide appropriately. Shall we set a 'deadline' for hop selection. Say Friday night?
