Group buy of haskap trees

Post by mr x » Fri Aug 05, 2011 12:38 pm

Gauging interest in a group order (requires 100 plants) of sour cherry and haskap berries. I'd be interested in 10 of each.

If I can close the deal on the place I'm trying to buy (9 acres), then I can probably help out.

I've never heard of a haskap. I'd love cherries (had 3 at my last place - very Southern Ontario, as well as the Saskatoons), but you can't grow anything like that on my current property. We might be able to grow Saskatoons, depends on salt tolerance.

I asked some guys at work to try and boost numbers but no takers. I count 40 on this thread. Are there any additional to that? If it takes another 60 trees, I'm thinking it's not going to happen this year...

Haha right on. I've asked my roommate to take a peak at some of the nurseries in the valley this week while he's home to see if there are any good buys. I'm guess there won't be anything as cheap as $4 a tree but I'll report back if he finds anything worth while.

I'm not moving until the end of November (assuming my house sells), so I'm out.

Haskap berry comes to Nova Scotia

The Haskap berry, well-known in Japan, has travelled across the world to make its presence known in Nova Scotia.

Known to have three times the antioxidants of a blueberry and twice the vitamin C of an orange, this new-to-Nova Scotia berry is starting to show up in a handful of restaurants in the province this season.

Get some saskatoons! My parents have lots of wild ones around their house, and those things are delicious, especially in pies. Great combo of berry flavour and an almond nuttiness. :mmm:

My dad went to the open house at Lahave Forests a couple weeks ago and we're probably going to order some plants. They're doing a pre order for 2012 if anyone is interested http://lahaveforests.com/lahave-blog/no ... rders.html Price goes down of course with the more you order!

looking at their site, it sounds like 2 cultivars would be needed - "berry smart blue" for pollination, and one of the other ones for the fruit.

If we can confirm this, I guess I'll go for 2 of each (pollinator & the fruity kind).

This week is insane for me, but I'll try and put together a google spreadsheet to tally orders. I'll also contact the folks selling them to confirm whether or not two varieties are required to produce fruit. I'll also try and find out when the latest is to put in an order. I agree with Robert - it'd be nice to get to 100!

Hello,

The Haskap Growers' Association of Nova Scotia has a new website with lots of information on the Haskap, varieties of berry, how to grow it, recipes etc at http://www.haskapnovascotia.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
