Glass Carboys

Post by jtmwhyte » Fri Nov 08, 2013 9:06 pm

After a 3rd infection in my plastic carboy (3G) I'm looking to pick up some 23 and 19.5L glass carboys. I'm going to bring them in and start getting rid of my buckets. Anyone here looking to get rid of some on the cheap?

I will drain that glass again.

What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

I have one that Sleepyjamie left behind, you can have it for free. He said it's ok!

Cool. I'll start with that one and see how I like it. Are you going to the grain pickup?

P.S. Is there any reason to believe that I can't get the plastic one sanitary again?

P.P.S. What's wrong with the glass ones?

1) I won't be at the grain pickup but may be able to pass it on to someone who will be.

2) Fill it full of boiling water then soak it in diluted bleach for a while?

3) Heavy. Drop and break, cut yourself and die, lose a brew. Milk cartons are your friend there.

4) I use plastic carboys but they may suffer from your original problem.

Boiling water in a plastic carboy is a bad bad bad idea I think... It will melt or at least soften and boiling water will flow out
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

ps it depends on the cause of the infection, for example, are there tiny scratches at the krausen level? I know mine have some from being washed , these are great places for bacteria to grow. I found that filling with very hot water and bleach and then upending them helped.

the problems with glass, they are heavy, they break, they dont allow the beer to breath ( heard it on the Jail show that the plastic will actually let some air and gases out) you cant put hot wort into them ( well not too hot) But they are easier to clean, you cant scratch the inside surface and you can watch the whirlfloc do its thing.

Have you considered the better bottle carboy? It's plastic and the shape of a traditional glass carboy?

Yeah, you're right. Also, the bottom could fall out.

This is actually why I want to at least try glass. I can hit it with some boiling water and actually scrub it if there is any build up.

I am sure you will run the risk of breaking the glass carboy with boiling water. Bleach, PBW and Starsan are your friends.

You can go pretty hot, but I wouldn't shock with boiling water. Keep in mind that killing of things with heat is usually a time/temperature balance, so you don't need full throttle heat if you give it time to work.
