Glad to be back at it! No malting this year...its not really worth the hassle...it was fun but my raw barley supply has dried up.

Re: Random brewing pics
One of the clearest beers I think I've had coming out of primary. Belgian Pale Ale fermented with WLP550.

Re: Random brewing pics
Pretty damn good actually, not as estery as the last time I used this yeast. This'll be going in a keg tomorrow night hopefully so that its ready for my week off work next week.
The other 5gal I fermented with WLP585 is quite tasty as well, but still pretty hazy.

How did you do that Jeff please? How long in the primary? whirflock? Chilled? Hot break skimmed? Fermentation temperature? Ferment top skimmed? what malt did you use? Looks amazing.

Re: Random brewing pics
About 2.5 weeks in primary, whirlfloc in the boil, chilled to 60°F with a 30 plate chiller. Fermentation temp free rose to around 70°F. I ferment in carboys, so no skimming. Once brew day is over I just forget about it for a couple weeks.GuingesRock wrote:How did you do that Jeff please? How long in the primary? whirflock? Chilled? Hot break skimmed? Malt/sugar bill was:
64.6% German Pilsner
15.2% Rye Malt
10.1% Vienna
10.1% clear Belgian Candi sugar
OG 1.050; FG 1.008

Awesome, Thanks Jeff!
....be nice to see a picture when it's made it to the glass, if you think of it. Enjoy your week off.

Whoa! That carboy is nearly full up to the lock! I've always been too scared to do that and leave a few inches of head space. Any messes with that Justin?jacinthebox wrote:German wheat in the carboy.

Re: Random brewing pics
Awesome! That's the same pot I've been using for my solo brews (thanks again Barr for the heads up on these rigs), but still haven't nailed down my technique. Can you give me an idea of the recipe you brewed for this beer? Volumes, grain weight? And how was your boil? I find I have to keep the lid 80% on for a proper boil. Not quite as powerful as I'd like it to be. But topping it up with some hot/boiling water from a kettle would help things.maltster wrote:Brewing a Simcoe IPA in the electric turkey fryer using modified BIAB w/ mini sparge.

Re: Random brewing pics
First time simply sprinkling in a dry yeast (Danstar Windsor) without shaking the living shit out of the carboy. Doesn't seem to be a problem.

Re: Random brewing pics
Annual cleaning of valves and fittings. I'm re-taping them now. I also opened up my pump head for a look... Spic and span!
I'm trying to get through my TODO list of getting ready to brew for the first time in months. IPA tomorrow, maybe an ESB or Altbier on Monday. 10 gallons each.

Yeah, I'm probably out of commission until after hoptoberfest, then it's wide open.
