Re: The espresso thread
Figured out what the problem is. I've been finding it hard to get a consistent grind, and it always seemed to get coarser until I took the hopper off and re-adjusted the grind setting. I talked with Baratza and they checked out the serial number and apparently there was something wrong with that batch (adjustment ring wasn't fastened properly). They are sending me a replacement with a prepaid return label for my current grinder. Great service from these guys

Keep us posted! Good to hear they were quick to fix it - I'm looking at a Baratza for my next toy.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

Dwayne dropped my tamper off today. It's great quality and this thing is a beast - it weighs 1lb!

Re: The espresso thread
Received the replacement grinder today - what a difference!
It's quieter, grinds WAY finer (I choked the espresso machine on a 9, and couldn't get a shot over 15 or 20 seconds on a 1 with the old grinder). I now have it set on 12 and pulled my best shot yet, though I'm sure it can use more fine tuning!

Anyone ever try the "Ethiopian Sidama Ardi Natural Sundried" beans from Java Blend? I'm really liking them.

Re: The espresso thread
I tried the guji, but it was when I had the fucked up grinder. I found it quite strong but it was good. I'll try it again with the new grinder.

Re: The espresso thread
Anywhere local to pick up a grouphead brush, or something to use as a grouphead brush?
And should I be backflushing this machine? I don't have a blind portafilter basket...

Re: The espresso thread
Ask Jim @ Java Blend if he has brushes. I bought mine when I ordered my machine. And yes, yes you shouldJimmy wrote:Anywhere local to pick up a grouphead brush, or something to use as a grouphead brush?

Let's call it a leaf or apple, then I'd say you were right on track.

Just do this modification.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Re: The espresso thread
Update on the Baratza Preciso:
They sent me a replacement grinder, free of charge, no hassle. It's been working great and grinding consistent with lots of room for adjustment
. I took it apart a couple weeks ago and found a broken piece of plastic on one of the burrs. This piece of plastic actually acts as a "fuse" - so it's the first point to break should the grinder encounter a green bean or rock (neither made its way through this grinder). I contacted Baratza and they offered to send me 2 replacement rings, free of charge
.
After researching a bit further, it seems like this isn't an issue with the Vario so I figured I'd ask Baratza about my options if I wanted to upgrade. I contacted them at about 3:30 today, and they offered me a full credit for my Preciso, and said they would charge me the difference in price between the two units. As of 8:30PM tonight, the new replacement grinder was dropped off to UPS with a return label included in the package
This is seriously the best customer service I've ever encountered. 4 thumbs up for these guys

Re: The espresso thread
Good stuff
On another bright note, I finally found and repaired the weak steam issue on my Bezzera. Now it'll blow the milk right out of the pitcher
That's right.
