Keg Relief valve leaking

I have a Spartenburg Challenger VI keg that has a leaky relief valve.



There is a small rubber seal where the relief valve seats that is probably the problem. it seems to be pretty old an brittle. Can this be replaced? It may have started life as an O ring but is kind of conical in shape now. Does anyone know a replacement source for the seal? The valve itself seems to function OK.

Try taking it apart and lubing it with vasaline or keg lube. That has done the trick for a couple of leaky valves for Mme in the past.

Jason, B+N distributors in Port Hawkesbury, across from central has quite a bit of stuff like o-rings fittings, tubing etc. You can give them a try.

I'me very familiar with B&N. I just need to know if this seal actually began life as an o-ring or if is a custom seal.

Although this is no help to you now...
I NEVER use those valves to releave pressure just for the fact that thy break - often.
I have a air connecter with a 3" air hose on it and use this to release pressure.

They're really not supposed to be manually operated are they? The Coke kegs usually can't be. I assumed they were there to automatically prevent potentially dangerous overpressure. I usually just depress the gas-in valve, but that does get messy when I have a way overcarbed full keg - which I do right now. It starts foaming up inside, then sprays foam out the valve, all over my beer-room. I really should hook the thumb tap up to it when I do that.

hm. i use mine fairly regularly, if i forget to disconnect before making carb'd water, etc. maybe i should change my behaviour

I don't see much of an issue with using the relief valve to manually relieve pressure. If you don't try to manually open it periodically, how would you know it will work when you need it to?

These kegs will go up to 130 psi - I seriously don't think you'll ever have that much pressure in it!
