ALES Open 2013 DUE April 4th

Post by Graham.C » Tue Feb 19, 2013 9:47 am

I didn't see this elsewhere: http://www.alesclub.com/index.php/compo ... -open-2013" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The ALES Club will be hosting the 20th annual ALES Homebrew Open from April 8th through 13th, 2013. The ALES Open is Canada's largest homebrewing competition for beer, mead and cider. Last year saw entrants from across Canada submit over 530 entries that were judged across all 28 BJCP style categories. The ALES Open is once again proud to be a part of the Canadian Brewer of the Year circuit.

Our competition is sanctioned by the Beer Judge Certification Program. Judging is conducted by certified BJCP judges using the BJCP 2008 Style Guidelines.
The competition is open to all 28 BJCP categories of homebrewed beer, mead and cider. Medals and prize packages are awarded to Gold, Silver and Bronze winners in each category. Prize packages consist of a wide variety of donated items from our many sponsors.

The major awards are:
Best of Show – Awarded to the single best beer entry. The Best of Show prize is the opportunity to brew one of your recipes at the Bushwakker Brewpub!
Homebrewer of the Year – based on total points earned from medals in categories 1-23 (entries must score a minimum of 30 points to count towards HoY)

Rookie of the Year – all first time entrants are eligible, based on total points earned from category medals (entries must score a minimum of 30 points to count towards RoY)
Mead Maker of the Year – Awarded to the single best mead entry
Cider Maker of the Year – Awarded to the single best cider entry
Club of the Year - based on total points earned from category medals (entries must score a minimum of 30 points to count towards CoY)

Results will be announced on April 13th at the Awards Ceremony, and will be posted on the ALES website by April 15th.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
RULES

All entries must be registered online. An announcement will be sent out with the link when it is available.

$6 fee for each entry. Make cheques payable to ALES Club.

We require 2 bottles per entry of any shape or size. No labels or markings other than the registration label are allowed. Any marks on caps should be blacked out. The registration label should be affixed just below the neck of the bottle with scotch tape. To print off your labels, select "Print Bottle Labels" from the Registration.

Only beers, meads and ciders made using home brewing equipment may be entered.

Entrants may only submit one entry per subcategory. For categories that have no subcategories (Categories 20 and 23), you may only submit one entry.

When registering your entries, do NOT use the Unique Ingredients or Comments section unless you are entering 6D (American Wheat or Rye), 16E (Belgian Specialty), 17F (Fruit Lambic). 20 (Fruit Beer), 21 (Spice/Herb/Vegetable), 22B (Smoked Beer), 22C (Wood Aged Beer), 23 (Specialty Beer), or Meads/Ciders. Refer to the BJCP Style Guidelines if you aren't sure what to enter.

Entries must be received at the Bushwakker by April 4th. Do not ship via bus courier, or COD, and please do not use packing corn! Entries must be couriered directly to, or dropped off at:
The Bushwakker Brewpub
2206 Dewdney Avenue
Regina, Saskatchewan
S4R1H3
(306) 359-7276

Conflicts or disputes will be settled by the Competition Chairman. All decisions are final.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email: competition@alesclub.com

Who is thinking of entering? Do you think we can grab that Club of the Year award? Maybe I will make my mocha stout and comfortably numb next week and enter those.

I may have something for this.
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

I'm hoping to have at least 2 beers to send, maybe 4 (if I can get the others brewed). Do you want to ship together?

I also hope to send in a few entries. I am too lazy to brew anything specially for a comp, but whatever I have closer to the entry time, I'll send in (if I think it stands a chance).

I have some beers that I'm happy with, and some that I like, but am not entirely sure that they're appropriate to style. I'm guessing I'm not the only person in this situation either. Does anybody want to get together sometime (preferably with some of the BJCP students) to taste beers?

How does mid March sound? That way we have plenty of time to get submissions in.

I'll have a couple to send in. I haven't missed the ALES comp in the last 5 years even though I have never won anything there.

It looks like the March monthly meeting is already going to be March 12, maybe we can all just bring beer then?

Sure - not 100% if I'll be there, but surely a few guys from the BJCP group will be!

Yes. When do you think we should aim to have them off by?

The weekend right before is Easter, that's potentially 3 or 4 days of our beer sitting on a truck or warehouse. If we ship Mar 25 (a Monday), they should arrive by Mar 28 and have the chance to sit around/settle for a week at the pub (where one would think that they'd treat the entries with respect).

I'd like to send entries in, but after hearing RubberToe saying it cost something like $200 for the ones he entered, I think I'll be passing.. :(

:o I've never spent that much! I usually send it Purolator ground (4 days - usually gets there in 3). From their site, a 10lb package would only be $45 (from Amherst, but Halifax can't be $160 more)

When I sent my entry to Calgary for the Yeast Wranglers comp it only cost me $17. That was via Canada Post 5 business days.

That was entry fees and 2 x 3 day express shipping ($60 and $80). Just be sure to send them early enough for ground shipping. I was also afraid of them freezing at the time.

Ok, perhaps I'm a moron (and probably the case), but I can't find the registration page on their website? Is it too early to register your beers and the page doesn't exist yet? I was hoping to get my entries sent off soon as I'll be on vacation later this month.

I didn`t have anything worthy to enter this year. I hope to have something ready for the Montreal comp though.
