Exploding Wine Bottles

Post by Tim Gregory » Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:54 pm

So the terrible wine I made years ago and left in my parents basement has apparently started exploding.

My father wants to get rid of them, but is worried about them exploding. Is there a safe way to open the bottles? Can they just be uncorked like a regular wine bottle?

Crazy, I would have thought the corks would have just popped out.

Eye protection. Gloves, etc... be careful.

I would smash them, not uncork them.

Thanks guys. I'll be careful.

There's 3 or 4 different kinds down there, so hopefully it's just the one batch that went bad. I'll dump them all just in case.

If you can move them carefully maybe covered with a blanket or something, take them outside and chill them down. That might drop the pressure enough to get the corks out safely...I'd still consider a face shield and gloves though
Kegged: El Dorado IPA, Rocketfuel 2.0, Wet Hopped Pale, Ryrish Red, Marzen, BN Exchange Dunkel, BN Exchange NEIPA, Lies Lies Lies - Citra <0.5% ale
Fermenting: NZ Pilsner with Enigma, Strawberry brett cider

My dad threw caution to the wind and emptied them with no issues. Now there's about 40litres of wine flowing through the sewers of spryfield.

A little heads up next time would be nice. Always willing to try the latest vintage of Spryfield Sewage Wine.
