Increasing bitterness?

Post by sleepyjamie » Mon Oct 08, 2012 10:15 am

Recently made a batch for someone and did a 10 gallon version. The beer was a bit cloying for me but they enjoyed it. I have 5 gallons remaining which I wanna keep on tap for myself. It's a simple pale ale using amarillo hops. I was aiming for 32 IBU but I think it's around 25.

Was wondering if i could do up a 30 min boil with some hops, chill then add to the keg?

Any other recommendations?

I've read that boiling hops in plain water isn't the best - but I don't remember why... whether it was poor utilization or what. Obviously, boiling them in wort is out of the question - you don't want to add unfermented wort to your finished beer.

How about pulling a quart or two out of the keg and boil the extra hops in that?

You can't boil fermented beer.

My advice is blend.

shouldn't ;)

it likely would taste pretty gross. blending is the best solution, make a 1 gallon batch with very high bitterness, top off your keg.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Just drink it or blend it with your DIPA from the tap.

You could add some of this: http://morebeer.com/view_product/7835/1 ... tract_1_oz" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pure, isomerized alpha acids!
