Propeller Zwickelbier

Post by Seanstoppable » Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:45 pm

For those that don't follow Propeller on the twitters or facebooks, they released a new, limited edition, available in growlers only brew yesterday.

From the announcement:
Propeller Zwicklebier is a smooth, unfiltered beer that has a light hop finish. An old world and unique German beer style, Zwickelbier is unfiltered and unpasteurized lager that dates back to the Middle Ages.

I found the beer to be a little light for me. Its the first time ive had that style before so i have nothing to compare it to, but it generally just tasted like a light beer
Serving:
-Strong Bitter
-Double Chocolate Espresso Stout
Fermenting/Conditioning:
-Robust Porter
-Raspberry Wheat
-American Pale Ale

From the Propeller site (http://www.drinkpropeller.ca/content/content_Media):
"The name Zwickelbier stems from the sampling cock ("Zwickel" in German) mounted at the outside of a cask or tank to take tastes for assessing the brew's progress during fermentation. Zwickelbier originated in the small artisanal breweries of Franconia, what is now Northern Bavaria. It is rarely exported to other German States or internationally."
From the German Beer Institute (http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Zwickelbier.html):
"The name Zwickelbier stems from the sampling cock ("Zwickel" in German) mounted at the outside of a cask or tank to take tastes for assessing the brew's progress during fermentation. Like Kellerbier, Zwickelbier originated in the small artisanal and home breweries of Franconia. It is rarely exported to other German States or internationally."
Perhaps they plagiarized the recipe too.

It's just an unfiltered version of the Pilsener. From the horse's mouth, responding to Jeff's question of whether it was lager or ale yeast:
Lager (it's Pilsener unfiltered with natural carbonation) like you would find in bravaria-Big flavour change from the Pils.
