Can or can't? That's where the presentation will become valuable. You can explain what tweaks you would have made if other ingredients had been available.

Related - I hope everyone has a picture in their presentation of the cinnamon sticks being left in the bag unused. ;)

Does anyone know if the presentation/judging event is going to be open to the rest of us peons who didn't take up the challenge? Or is it participants/judges only? I'd be interested in seeing how of the masters of homebrewing tackled the challenge. And how the rest of you did too of course! :P

I doubt it, it's during a time when Stillwell is actually closed.

Yes! We welcome spectators. After all this is meant to be an afternoon of fun and camaraderie above all. With (hopefully) some awesome brews to evaluate.

I thought about using it. I went as far as drawing a sample and tasting it with a bit of cinnamon... I'll never do that again. The cinnamon stays in the bag.

Yeah, cinnamon is part of what made my bad barley wine bad. That and a lot of other things.

I've had delicious beer and awful beer brewed with cinnamon. Same goes for every other ingredient out there. Don't let anyone tell you what to do, that's half the fun of this competition:)

That being said, 4 sticks... Gutsy move!
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

I should've pulled out the cinnamon for our coffee, would've made a great slide in the presentation.

If we fake it we don't have to ruin perfectly good coffee with cinnamon either.

Does anyone know the pyrotechnics regulations at Stilly?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

A request similar to this was approved, however this would need to be a quick setup and tear down as traffic would be blocked briefly. Schoolhouse has donated the delivery bus, and they will be jumping the empty kegs in the basement.

Black Box Challenge judging and presentations

Post by henry » Wed Mar 02, 2016 11:53 am

All,

I hope by now that all of you have brewed your beers, bottled and tasted them and are all convinced that you have winning entries!
We're all totally stoked to have this competition and we hope that you're all excited as well.
Remember,

There is a slight change of plans for the presentations this Sunday. Due to staffing constraints (The gang at Stillwell have been good enough to have the bar AND kitchen open for the duration of the presentations and judging) we have to start at NOON (that's 12:00) on Sunday March 6th.

Remember, you will have to make a 5 minute presentation with visuals as part of your score, so brush up on your public speaking skills (others will be watching!) Stillwell will be open so there may be people off the street. The media may be there too (they've been invited), although it's not guaranteed.

See you all there!
Henry

Where is the best place to park? I parked at Scotia Square last time I was there to pickup grains. Anyone know anything closer?

I usually don't have a problem finding on-street parking in the downtown area around Stillwell (ex: Granville St. at Province House, Lower Water, etc..)

Sunday morning shouldn't be too bad for parking.

Looking forward to Sunday. Do we know if the beers will be tasted and judged right after each presentation?
