Re: What are you reading....?
I don't read but instead listen to audio books in my vehicle when i'm out and about for work. Right now i'm listening to The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1)
Novel by Scott Lynch.
Novel by Scott Lynch.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I recently finished reading The Martian by Andy Weir, and I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the movie version this fall (although I'm sure the book will be better).

I also read a lot of scifi, but I kind of hated the Martian, really disliked the writing style. I know I'm in the vast minority with that opinion though.
Finishing up Ken Liu's debut novel at the moment, "grace of kings" - its OK but I preferred his short stories, eg "mono no aware" and "the paper menagerie". The former is available free online, worth the read.
Next up is third book in The Culture series, "Use of Weapons".

I will admit that I didn't like the style at the beginning, but it grew on me.CorneliusAlphonse wrote:I also read a lot of scifi, but I kind of hated the Martian, really disliked the writing style. I know I'm in the vast minority with that opinion though

I'm reading Yeast from the brewing elements series, but if we're talking fiction here I just finish Glue by Irvine Welsh.

Elmore Leonard in the summer can't be beat! Quick, fun reads and you can hang out an entire book over the weekend at the beach.JohnnyMac wrote:Just opened this blast from the past. Reminds me of how much I dig EL......

After a long hiatus from reading (anything other than technical documents) I recently started Dan Brown's 'Inferno' on a flight back from L.A. It's pretty much standard Dan Brown... apocalyptic, questionable science... but fun.

Gibson is a genius. Neuromancer et al were written 30+ years ago now which astounds me more every time I think of it. The Bridge trilogy he wrote after that is practically prescient.
And try to find the follow-up to "Surely You're Joking…" I think it was called "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" Feynman was definitely a flawed character but also one of the brightest minds of the 20th century.

Re: What are you reading....?
Neuromancer was great. You're right, in the context of the time it was written it's even more brilliant. It would be hard for anyone who wasn't alive yet to appreciate how different the world was in the early 1980's.mumblecrunch wrote:Gibson is a genius. I really enjoyed the Feynman autobiography. It was a great window into how he thought about things, and just what made him so brilliant. It was interesting to see his disdain for the worst aspects of academia, and his love of learning things not necessarily considered important by his peers. A true character. I'll have to check out the second one when I get a chance.

Probably my favourite Culture novel out of the 5 that I've read. Definitely a mind-fuck ending!CorneliusAlphonse wrote:Next up is third book in The Culture series, "Use of Weapons".
I'm burning through the Expanse series but I took a break mid way to read Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan and it was absolutely amazing. Very noir, gritty, and violent as hell. I love it when sci-fi explores the dark side of humanity.
PS. I'm on Goodreads if anyone wants to add me: https://www.goodreads.com/leadhead9" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I'm mostly reading beer books lately. I went through Brown Ale and Bock of the 'Classic Beer Style' series in the last couple of weeks and I'm just about to crack open 'Malt'. Having said that, what with the Tour de France underway, I also read 'Slaying the Badger'.

Altered Carbon had a really interesting style to it. The other two Takeshi books were worth a read as well. Also enjoyed Market Forces as well, same undercurrent of social commentary that runs through all his work.evanisnor wrote:I'm burning through the Expanse series but I took a break mid way to read Altered Carbon by Richard Morgan and it was absolutely amazing. Just finished reading 'Ready Player One', and really enjoyed it - loved all of the 70's & 80's pop culture.

Next on my list to read is 'Year One'.
