Anyone have a recipe for Oland's like Ale?

Post by NScooknet » Wed Oct 19, 2011 5:15 pm

Hi All,

Since I like to drink Oland's export ale, but hate that their quality sux big time lately (I'm waiting for a refund from Labatts for two 2/4's that were bad actually, which is WHY I started learning how to brew my own!) I was wondering if anyone out there had a recipe that was close to it, and maybe one that I could actually improve upon with better quality ingredients.

I know the whole point of home brew is to make QUALITY crafted beers, which I'm currently learning to do, but if anything, I'm curious about what actually goes into (or doesn't go into because they are too cheap) Olands export ale.

My first beer at 12 was an Olands, can't help if I'm nostalgic, haha.

What a shame since inbev bought out everyone that what used to be good maritime beer has suffered a not so kind fate after all these years ;(

Chris :)

I think we had a thread here on how to brew Keith's (the newer version). Should be very close. IIRC, the mash is the same, it's just the yeast/ferm temp that's different.

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Kewl, thanks!

I used to LOVE Keith's, really missed it when I moved out to Vancouver island years ago, but then my tastes changed I guess, or they changed it or something, I dunno.

I just find it watered down, and to me, it tastes somehow "unfinished", like it's missing something.

I still like Olands, has more of a bite to it, but it also is a bit more watery to me now, maybe it's just me, not sure, but on top of that, like i said, I've had alot of bad beer from them in the past few months.

The Olands that was bad tasted like a tin can, REALLY aluminum like, and flat, or close to flat, and on top of that, a few twist off bottles broke in my hand when removing the cap, so I'm guessing they are having bottling issues.

My wife's grandfather worked for Olands, and he would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what was going on with them now!

Thanks!

Chris ;)

I think I've been growing a pallet for some time now, not sure what the excuse is for liking Olands still...LOL

It's kinda like that crappy food your mom cooked for you when you were a kid, it tasted like crap, but now, it reminds you of the good old days....a love hate relationship for sure, haha.

That's probably why people still eat haggis in this world....doh.

I think your right about that!

It's funny how a persons taste matures over time.

I was complaining at the liquor store one day about the lack of variety of craft beers available here, there really are only a couple choices, mainly Propeller and Garrison.

What would it take for a person to start selling the beer they make?

I noticed a small brewery in Mill Village called "Hell Bay" brewery, I wonder if they distribute their product anywhere? Never seen it at the liquor store before.

No, I eat haggis because (a) I like it, and (b) it grosses people out :-) The crazy thing is that I couldn't bring myself to eat the Andouillette when we were winetasting in the Champagne region.
Currently on tap: Nothing!
In keg: Still nothing.
In Primary: Doggone American Rye Pale Ale

hey, a haggis eater! Now someone can understand why I still drink Olands, hahaha

Seriously though, no offence meant, sorry if i did offend you, I should be respectful of other people's tastes, just as I'd like people to respect mine.

BTW, what is Andouillette ??

No offense taken at all. I seem to recall the foodies around here talking haggis more than once (come January 25th, almost everyone loves haggis).

Andouillette is a tripe sausage with pork or veal. How different can that be from haggis (without the oatmeal)?

They don't supply the LC... which is why you haven't sen it there.

I do believe you can buy growlers from them in Mill Village though.
Their stuff is also on-tap at Lane's

Drop them a line and find out ;)

Map needs an update with Acadie Broue (Patrice), and the new PEI micro.

Kewl, thanks for that!

Ya know, about 20 years ago, I started building a small micro brewery setup, all stainless, even freon wort chillers, pretty good stuff, but then life changed and I had to leave it all behind and I never did get to brew a single batch on it.

Hopefully one day I'll get a decent setup going again, but it all takes money!
