Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Hey all,
Just a question on this - are flavour additions allowed? Things like aging in liquor casks, vanilla, etc seem to be commonplace but are they allowed here.
I've never entered a brew competition and I'm interested to taste a bunch of styles and chat it over with some of you folks.

Flavour (oak aged, fruit, spice, vegetable) additions would typically be entered in categories 20-23 (see the link below).

They're allowed, but I wouldn't recommend it. You're being judged not just on the quality of the beer, but also how closely it conforms to the style guidelines.

I understand that the judges need a standard but I feel these guidelines sometimes stifle creativity

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Well, yes and no. It's true your oaked Robust Porter is out of style, and probably won't win the competition, but I wouldn't say it stifles creativity. Folks are brewing some fantastic beers that are out of the "traditional" styles, and entering them in the alternate ones (wood, fruit, vegetable, experimental).
But even then, the BJCP isn't the be all, end all of beer!

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I agree some fantastic beers are made within style...I still say it can stiffle creativity in these one style comps...wouldn't matter in a wide open comp.
I think it would be cool if someone held a comp with a base style in mind...say Robust Porter...but leave the rest up to the brewer create...vanilla porter, oaked porter, chocolate porter....I know it prob would be a nightmare to org and judge this...but these are my thoughts
and stop giving away secrets Chalms....lol...I didn't oak mine
I pulled back on my big spruce beer, and now am pulling back on this one

Don't forget to bottle off a few extras for the brewnosers comp. I'm bottling a few beers from every batch until entrées are up.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Are there shipping instructions for this competition. I don't see any bottle labels or any instructions for them. Do we just stick the entry form with a cheque in an envelope and leave the bottles blank?

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Not an official answer, I put my name and phone # on removable labels on each bottle and got the address from the Garrison web site.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I'd say a removable label or paper attached by rubber band to each bottle with name and phone number is the way to go.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp

I'll be very surprised if it places at all. I don't like it much, and won't drink it unless there is nothing else around. But those who like it like a lot.

On the other hand your beer might do well. Version 1 that I had was very good. Hope you didn't f' around with it too much.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
Same recipe only difference were grain subs based on the grain sub chart. I'm not confident in the beer, however it's drinkable and the boys have almost killed 2 kegs of it in a month.
