It's on lobster physiology. Just the viva left before I get to wear the funny hat.
Congrats, John!

I got the cleaner flavor, but felt it was from the hops.. a lemony type of flavor.

I personally wouldn't call it a cleaner flavor, but taste what your talking about, kind of reminds me of a lemon peel. But what mainly gets me is the high bitterness, really kills the beer. Altho as I keep drinking it my taste buds adjusted and it's starting to become more drinkable.

The reason I liked it was actually because of the opposite - I perceived much lower bitterness than their usual IPA, found it quite nice.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

It's funny, the variance we're seeing on this beer. I didn't find it overly bitter, or low on bitterness. I did find they focused more on the late hops than they normally do..the late hopping is what I thought made this better than their other hoppy beers. I do still think that it needs to dry out though - not sure if it's due to crystal malt, or poor fermentation.

I wonder if the sweetness you had took away from the bitterness and as you said poor fermentation. Wondering if it dried up in the kegs?
or is it possible you drank something previous that killed your taste buds that would have left you perceiving this beer as hoppy?

Also according to untappd, I was looking through the list of comments, and they are all over the map as well.

I've tried it a couple of times. Nash and I shared a couple of growlers that had been filed at the Prop Shop 20 minutes earlier. Also had it at Stillwell this evening. I do think that there were some fermentation issues (flavor for sure, and possibly FG - definitely found it sweet). When Nash and I had some, I hadn't had anything else before it, however, I found the sweetness was more obvious as the beer warmed up.

Just for the record where did everyone get their supply of the fly time? We got a growler from burnside

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Congrats man :spilly: , must be a huge relief

My defense is scheduled in April, can't wait to be done.
Awesome! Good luck with your defence. Mine will likely be in March and I feel the same way - can't wait to be done.
We'll have to get together for some beers to celebrate after both are finished up. X)

I tried it at Stillwell and gave it a 3 on Untappd, I found it grainy and the bitterness unbalanced.

Got these from a buddy in Ontario that recently returned from Palm Springs. He tried to score some Pliny for me but he said it was virtually impossible. Anyways, he got me these and they'll be my first time trying anything from Russian River. Looking forward to sampling! :rockin:
