Re: Barrel Filling - the barrel is full!

Post by mr x » Sun Jul 22, 2012 7:43 pm

OK, we got it done! I'll get some pics up in a bit. Much thanks to Nick. Something I had forgot to mention, it will cost us each $15 for the barrel (Nick exempt for looking after this). Some of us paid Jmac Saturday, everyone else try to get him the money sometime soon. If you want to give it to me by whatever means, I can transfer it to him.

1. X 10 gal
2. Johnny 1 keg
3. BBB 1
4. Chalmers 1
5. Nick 5 gal + a bit from keg to top up barrel
6. Tim Gregory 1
7. Sandy 1
8. Jayme/Gavin 1
9. RobD in for Hogie 1

So we had just over 50 gallons (approx) into the barrel), and there was 2-3 litres of scotch in the bottom ( 8-) ). This will have some whomp for sure. For those of you who tried Nash's, he said his barrel was completely empty, so do the math on the taste.... :)

We may be looking at a month or so for emptying, so if peeps want in on the next one, get moving, as the barrel shouldn't be left empty again. I really think it should be RIS again, as some guys already have it brewed. I will leave co-ordination and organization of the next filling to somebody on that list, as I won't be contributing to the next one.

Thanks to Kegger, LD & BBB for waiting for my slow ass Saturday. Got stuck on the wrong side of the 103 shutdown, so ended up being over an hour late.

Now to figure out a good way to get the beer OUT of the barrel! Maybe a 2-hole bung, use CO2 to push it out, back in to everyone's kegs?

That's one possibility. The other is to do it by vacuum. I'm not sure if Nick is on his own well or city water, but I have an eductor that pulls a heavy duty vacuum that would be good for transferring back to the kegs.

For this / first round brew did any of you do a partigyle mash and make a smaller beer from second runnings? I'm thinking of doing something similar but with modifications to my BIAB setup.

Although I didn't actually contribute to this barrel, I did brew my RIS in case it was needed. And, I did take the second runnings from the brew for a small beer. the OG was 1.038 and the FG was 1.010 so it clocks in at roughly 3.6%, I haven't tasted it yet, it's sitting in a keg waiting it's turn patiently. But I'm glad I did it, it cost me nothing and I got an extra 5 gallons of beer!

TIm and Brian and I did too. It has been bottled, but not tested yet. Tasted good warm and flat during transfer. Free Beer is good.

Our OG was somewhere around 1.048 - 1.050 but that was just running through 25 more liters to boil up and make a 20 liter batch. We had a mash for 40 liters.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I handed off the 10 gallons of SAAZ RIS to Liverdance Saturday, so ours will be there for sure for filling.

I didn't contribute to the barrel, but I'm going to be in the city that day... will there be a brewnosers meeting after the main event?

I won't be doing anything Sunday. Need a break before Hoptoberfest.

I may have a hard time getting my ass out of bed Sunday for 9am, but I can be there (hopefully no more than a few minutes late).

Very nice. John M has talked me in to priming the keg. I'll bring some to H-fest but it will not be fully carbed.

Emptying and re-filling went really well. Thanks to Nick for hosting the barrel for the past 2 months, and the next 2 (or more), and Mr. X for getting the tools together to move the beer out safely!
