Making Suds in the Laundry Room
The wife had been asking me to finish the laundry room....but I don't think this is what she had in mind. HaHaHa!
Very excited about my little brew room set up. Haven't been brewing a year yet so this is farther than I expected to be by now. Great to have a designated space for my hobby. No more wasting time getting set up each brew day.
Found these 7 gallon electric turkey fryers with digital thermostat controls at Wal-Mart. I like that I can set the fryer at a certain temp and go about my business doing other things and know it will be ok. The fryers came with spigots which made them easy to use as a gravity feed system. No more lifting heavy pots of hot liquid. Large laundry sink for easy clean up. Bent strap steel to brace my shelving. Mash tun converted from cooler. If you look close you can see a turkey fryer thermometer sticking up through the cooler lid. Have a air exchanger vent in the room to expel moist air. You can't see it in the pic but I have an immersion chiller that hooks up easily to my laundry sink.
I've heard that using electric elements directly in contact with the wort can cause scorching and a burnt taste but I honestly have not experienced that and I used this system now for at least 8 brews.
I'm sure that as I get more experience I will outgrow this system but for now I'm really enjoying it.

Something like $69.95. I bought one and tried it a couple times then went back to get another one so I wouldn't have to transfer the wort back into it for the boil.

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
I have three kids so time space and money are tight. Taking over the kitchen for an entire Sunday just wasn't working for me or the family. I was so happy to find a cheap and easy solution. Now I can brew in my own space and not bother anyone. Ahhhhhh

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
I saw those fryers at WalMart but I wasn't sure how much wort it would boil. How long does it take to bring 6-7 gals up to a boil?

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
Well I haven't timed it but if I were to estimate I would say it takes about 45 min from room temp. I usually set the boil kettle to 215 F while the wort is draining from the mash tun so it's boiling not long after its full.

That's really cool. What size batches are you making in that system?

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
I'm making 6 gallon batches. The pot holds 7 galling if you fill it right to the rim and after it boils down I'm usually around the 6gallon mark. On some of those longer boils tho I have added a little half way through. Not sure if that's good brewi g practice or not but it's what I've done a few times to be sure I'm getting my full 6 gallon batch. It's a lot of work for only 6 gallons but the way I see it I'm still learning so making more batches will just build my experience.

I am way late to this thread, but when speaking with you last night, Barr, I was intrigued. And now that I see pics, I'm in love with it. Do you have any model name/numbers for the fryers, or know where I could get one? I checked the WM website, but couldn't find anything. This sounds perfect for my Brew in a Bag plan. Thanks!

Do you have any sort of ventilation?

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
I have to chime in here as well!! Damn fine setup! I have a similar room I use for fementing but have not gone to the electric brew system because I was afraid of the cost and my wife's subsequent reaction. This could bring it within reach. I'm curious about ventilation as well. I could add a vent hood to my basement which is not actually below grade...
I think the hunt for electric turkey fryers is on!!

This is the closest I could find, however it is twice the price, and from WM US, not Canada.

That's a great little setup you've got there! It sure makes brewing in the winter much easier!

I've seen the electric turkey fryers in-store at CT before. However, I can't seem to find anything on their web site now...

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
For ventilation is was lucky because the main air exchanger for the whole house is right above my kettles so I just pull off the pipe that leads to the rest of the home so all the air inlet is concentrated to that one spot during my brew day. Seems to work fine for me but I would like to someday add a hood. Maybe a winter project.
The fryers are called Cajin Injector. Looks like the one from the site. I had seen them online for much more $$ myself but for some reason I was lucky and got the first one for $65 and a couple weeks later got the other for $69. Not sure why such a difference in price but still probably worth it. I'll take a look in the Digby WM and see if there any more.
Finding these fryers gave me the brewery I wanted in a way that was easy and affordable. Wish you guys luck. If anyone wants to see my setup in action just let me know and we can arrange a brew day.

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
That's the one Chalmers. 30qt 7.5 us gallons. Maybe my local WM was just clearing them out. Not sure. I think there is a YouTube vid of a guy using it to brew in a bag. After I bought mine I looked online to see if I was crazy. I was originally looking at WM for deep fryer pot with a spout just to use one my stove top but got lucky finding this.
Funny that you guys are into this because I was half intimidated putting it up incase I would make a fool of myself brewing in electric turkey fryers. Haha

Re: Making Suds in the Laundry Room
My original plan for an all electric home brewery was this. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0037Z7HQ0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
But it was a little more than I could justify spending right now and it's really hard to find brew pots that a magnet will stick to in order for the induction to really be effective.
