VPB1188 (aka CONAN) Slurry Harvest For Brewnosers

Post by NASH » Thu Mar 13, 2014 8:17 pm

I'll have Conan yeast slurry ready for harvest between March 19th and 21st for most Brewnosers that want to give it a whirl.

I haven't brewed with this strain before so as the beer progresses I'll keep y'all updated as to when the slurry will be ready for harvest. It'll either be Firkin Wednesday, March 19th or Friday March 21st. At this point I'm leaning toward the 19th.

TubberRoe worked up the dregs from a can of Heady Topper for me. Hooray for TubberRoe!!

I cultured TubberRoe's starter up into a high cell count 50 L starter and dumped 850 L of DIPA on to it. Lag time was ~ 15 hrs. High krausen today and the brewhouse smells divine! When fermentation is complete I'll crash it down over two - three days to ~ 50 F to get it knocked down for harvesting without being too rough on it. I intend to use it again so if there's not enough to go around this time, there will be more on next generation. I'll wash it with Chlorine Dioxide between gens to keep it uber-clean.

First in-line is TubberRoe, of course. Some slurry for myself to utilize again, and a few L going to Bad Apple Brewhouse for Jeff to have a crack at. After that, it's a free for all.

I 'might' possibly pre-package it for you all so we know where we're at, so post up and pencil it in, folks! :cheers2:

I'd love some if a fellow noser can hold it for me until I hit the city

Damn, should have planned my trip to the city for next weekend rather than this weekend. If anyone is travelling up this way and could grab me some, I'd love to try it!

Why not? I'll take one of those.

As long as I don't need to do anything but keep it in the fridge until he can pick it up, I'll volunteer to grab one for jtmwhyte too.

Phuk yeah. Lets make sure Rob Douglass gets some too, he's the one who gave me the can to culture.

I'm looking forward to tasting your brew as well.

If there's still some available, I'd love to take it as well (if chalmers doesn't mind holding on to it for me, of course!).

Thanks!

This beast is down to 4.5 Plato (~1.018 sg) today and still chugging a bit so I'm leaving another two days to finish up before knocking the yeast down for harvest.

Looking like a Friday harvest and pickup or I might be able to do something over the weekend as well.

Who's brewing with it this weekend? How about a Conan-off?

I am hoping to brew with it this weekend! Looking to make a Citra DIPA and some sort of hoppy Pale Ale with it.

Yeah I'll probably be brewing with this by next week. I'm thinking Citra and Falconer's Flight. 7-8% abv, light on the crystal malts.

It's not too late, the question is, will there be enough to go around!?

Also, brewing in a week or two with it doesn't really make sense to me. Use it while it's fresh and viable, boys!

Also, I did get containers from X but they're in limited supply. I'll update here as I can.

DIPA was at 4 Plato today, still a couple bubbles...

maybe I will wait to see if there's a 2nd offering for this...I want to have my water tested and make adjustments if needed before I brew a Heady Topper clone...

Thanks Nash :cheers2:
