Tell you Saturday. I'm really not even thinking of what we'll get or concerned till I see yeast.

Carbonation could be tricky with fresh wort.

Yeah, and if there's no extract we'd have to save wort and yeast from the brew day, and hope that carbonates to the right level.

E-mail from Boxing Rock.

Hello All!

Thanks to everyone for your terrific enthusiasm to our Black Box Challenge.

Within five minutes of posting the event live to Eventbrite and posting on Facebook and brewnosers.org, we had two entries! And 36 hours later we were completely sold out. Congratulations!

We understand that the timelines are tight for this competition, so we've done our very best to get all the Black Boxes together in time and we're happy to announce that you all can pick them up two days early! The black boxes (well, we couldn't find boxes large enough in time so some 55 lb grain sacks will have to do) will be available at Stillwell Beer Bar starting Thursday, January 21 during Stillwell's business hours. We do hope that you all pick up your Black Boxes in hand before the weekend so that you all can get brewing.

We have 20 entrants, so the judging will be a busy day.

You are all required to be present on the day of the judging and we're negotiating with Stillwell to see if they can have munchies (and beer) available for purchase during the judging.

We've made this competition unique in that you will have to make a presentation in person to the judging panel and you will be scored on your presentation. You can make it as fancy as you like, but you have to keep it to five minutes. Be prepared to answer questions from the judging panel. After your presentation is complete, the judging panel will taste your beer and score it using a simplified BJCP procedure, as well as a subjective scorecard.

The overall score will be calculated as follows:
BJCP scoresheet: 40 %
The presentation: 30 %
Subjective evaluation: 30%

Some have asked me what the purpose of the presentation is. After all, it's an unorthodox thing to do at a brewing competition.

Well, when a brewery comes on the scene, people are interested, sometimes above all else, in the story behind the brewery, the stories the brewers have, their histories, past lives, why they picked "Town-X" for their brewery, why they chose the name for it, and all that cool back story.

Well, we want to know YOUR story. Tell us why you chose the style you chose, what your home-brew setup looks like, what techniques you chose to use, what (and why) you named your entry, any technical challenges you had to overcome, et-cetera, et-cetera…

Be creative! Show us pictures (they're mandatory, by the way) It's worth a significant amount to your final score.

We also encourage you all to stick around to hear everyone else's presentation (and maybe sneak a taste). Because there are 20 entries and we have to judge them all sequentially, be prepared to stick around several hours on March the 6th.

The entry forms and contest rules are all enclosed as an attachment to this email. Be sure to bring the completed entry forms with you.

The Black Box ingredients? You'll know those when you pick up your packages at Stillwell. ;-)

If anyone has any questions with regards to the competition, don't hesitate to ask them directly to me and I'll do my best to provide a satisfactory answer.

Also, finally, I'd appreciate a response from each of you saying "yup I got it" or something of that sort so that I know that everyone is in the loop.

Thanks! Best of luck to all, and happy brewing!

Ok, there's some different stuff here, some of which I'm completely unfamiliar with and had to google. There's definitely some potential for some good beers, I'll be curious to see what we come up with.

Are you guys able to share what's in it? Or do they want all of the entrants to pick them up first?

Let it be a contest first. Then comment.

I was quite shocked the amount of stuff inside the bag. I had to park at Scotia Square and walk with a stroller and my little guy. It was not easy walking with the bag and controlling the stroller.

Lots of great stuff, but no clearing agent which means we can dry hop the crap out of it.

"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

That yeast is quite a wildcard. Has anyone used the T-58 before? I've been reading online and doesn't sound very promising. I made my first beer today and depending on that yeast, I may have to brew another.

Interesting ingredients. Some liquid yeast would have been nice. I'm not a fan of T58. Too peppery for me and takes forever to drop out of suspension. My mind goes in a few directions with those ingredients. Have fun all.
