So could somebody more experienced in tasting explain to me the differences between a well hopped american robust porter and roasty black IPA?

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I hope Nash chimes in, because I'm sure he has the specifics. Most commercial Black IPAs out there seem to be just porters with some extra bittering hops thrown in. I think a true "Black IPA" is much more than that. Higher IBUs, plus a hop schedule to optimize hop aroma and flavour and complement the roastiness.gm- wrote:So could somebody more experienced in tasting explain to me the differences between a well hopped american robust porter and roasty black IPA?

So it is as fuzzy as it looks then
Must be challenging for the judges when beer within the same category can taste like bold english brown ale or black IPA

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
A Robust Porter, even a hop forward one, shouldn't taste like a Black IPA.
Back IPA is like an American IPA and it's black. I don't think there are many examples where you can taste the roast. Having said that, I prefer a slight roast because what's the point.
A Robust Porter is way maltier as well. I know the style guidelines say it can be hop forward but don't think DIPA hops. Did anyone here have Nash's Robust Porter at H&T? I think that one was both roasty and hop forward.
Disclaimer: I'm no BJCP judge.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
The Black IPAs that I have really liked have had nice roast that complement the hops. I was therefore thinking about making something along those lines, but perhaps with a bit more complex malt backbone and lower IBUs (40ish instead of 60ish).

And just to confuse things further, think about American Stout.

And the plot thickens, so differences if any between American stout and american hopped robust porter? More complex malt bill in the porter?

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
One thing that comes to mind is coffee roast in stout, more roasted barley.

Batch #1 is just about carbonated and I have an available tap, looking forward to giving it a try.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
You think that confuses things? There are some well respected English authors who claim that historically there is no functional difference between Porter and Stout. And that calling something a Stout vs calling it Porter is less about recipe and more about marketing.RubberToe wrote:And just to confuse things further, think about American Stout.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I called Garrison yesterday to see how many submissions we were allowed. This year it is 1 per brewer. Looks like I'm brewing batch # 1 again and increasing my mash temp. I'll brew another batch if I'm not happy with this one.

For me the first batch nearly always seems to be the best, gave up on trying to improve beers a long time ago. Your batch #1 was very good.

Re: Garrison Homebrew Comp
I have 24 bottles of my original version, bottled and stashed away in a box on the hump of my keezer. Brewed it 29th October. I named it "Chocolate Orange." A beer needs a name, just the same as a child does ...and a wife
...and a dog etc.
