Post by mindless2 » Wed Dec 30, 2015 10:29 am

Just wondering what books people have found that have been beneficial to their understanding of homebrewing and helped the create great brews!!

There are so many books out there on the hobby, hard to choose! !

Modern Homebrew Recipes by Strong is a great read...short but good. I picked up a few tips right away.

I also have the homebrewers companion...and just ordered American sour beers and the Hops book

Gordon Stong's Brewing better beer is good as well.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

As far as actual recipes/styles, I found 'brewing classic styles " a very useful read. Not to read straight through, but to read a section about one style and good recipe. Reference book like.

I received a copy of Randy Mosher's "Mastering Homebrew" for Christmas, and it's probably the best general home brewing book I've read. Very well written and organized, and good information.

How to Brew by John Palmer is a must have. It's also free online: http://www.howtobrew.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have several books about particular styles, they really help to get into the details. Such as these: http://www.brewerspublications.com/cate ... er-styles/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My favs in order

Yeast - comprehensive and provides a good base for yeast handling.

Mastering Homebrew - great first book. Contains less technical information than How to Brew but contains more information on recipes and ingredients. He has an entertaining writing style.

Brewing Classic styles - good style guide.

Principles of Brewing Science - for when you want to go a little deeper on how things work.

Books to avoid.
I did not like Malt, it was poorly written and poorly edited. Modern Homebrew Recipes is an excellent book but he didn't include percentages for his recipes and he has a whole section dedicated to complaining about other people not including vital information in their recipes. The irony ruins the book for me otherwise it would be a great book.

Experimental Homebrewing by Beechum and Conn was a very good read.

Brewing Better Beer by Strong.

Water and Yeast in brewing elements series were great for technical resources and better than malt and hops.

Mastering Homebrew by Kosher.

Then of course Palmer and Papazian... I like to read them all!

Radical Brewing by Randy Mosher is a great book for seeing how you can go off the beaten path a little (or a lot). Especially good in tandem with a book like Brewing Classic Styles so you can compare a solid style recipe with a non-traditional recipe.

Palmer's HTB, BCS, and Daniels' Designing Great Beers are my main reference books. Malt has a lot of interesting material, but overall not a very good book. I'm currently working through the Classic Styles series. The Bock book was good.

I find myself going back to Brewing Classic Styles and Gordon Strong Brewing Better Beer on a regular basis.

Randy Mosher's Mastering Homebrew is 3.99 on Google Play as an Ebook. And other good deals. Brewing Classic Styles is 9.99. Palmer's How to Brew is 9.99.
