Conan / ECY29 / YG001 / GY054 / Heady Topper Yeast

Post by RubberToe » Thu Nov 21, 2013 3:16 pm

Has anyone here brewed with Conan, AKA ECY29 / YG001 / GY054. It's the yeast The Alchemist uses in Heady Topper and seems quite unique. I'd like to get my hands on some.

Edit: The Yeast Bay's Vermont Ale is cultured from this strain as well.

I'd love to get my hands on some as well. We did a group buy of ECY yeast a while back. I can't remember the name of the brew shop though. I think Boogie was handling that group buy.

+1. I'd be down for some as well if we have a lead.

Pretty sure this is the place we got it from, but looks like they're out of Conan. ECY does pretty small product releases if I remember correctly, so unless you order it as soon as a store gets stock, you're SOL.

Love2Brew was indeed the place i dealt with for the group order. They were fantastic to deal with, just not too keen on shipping to Canada. It was a bit of back and forth before it all got worked out. Everything went well with the order, but I did get the feeling he wouldn't want to do it again. That being said, I'd recommend the shop/site and it can't hurt to ask. That yeast wasn't available at the time, but I would certainly like to try it.

Add my name to the list for wanting some.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

There's a guy in BC supposed to send me a vial of some he's been using. He said it's a mix of some he harvested from Heady Topper and ECY29. My plan is to build it up and split it up for us, then do a brew to see how it turns out.

Also, it looks like the only other place to get it is from at the moment is GY054 through http://www.scotzinbros.com/yeast/gigaye ... -ale-yeast.

I have half a mind to get both, or wait to see how the stuff from BC pans out.

Ok, the starter seemed to go great. A little slower than a fresh vial or smack pack but that's to be expected. I did detect a nice peachy smell.

It's cold crashing now, 900 ml.

The sample I got was obviously from a post - ferment yeast & trub slurry so it probably has a higher than optimal bacterial count. I have half a mind to plate some and start a fresh colony.

I'll at least split some off of this one, maybe 2 - 4 "vials" worth, and grow up a new ~2L starter for a test brew, and also plate some when I find some agar.

What do you guys think?

Also, someone here offered my a fresh can of Heady Topper to culture yeast from. I'll post about that one too once I get a starter going. I'd like to compare them.

If you're interested in this yeast go read the HBT topic on it. A lot of people are having a hard time with it, but challenge accepted IMO. http://www.homebrewtalk.com/f163/conan- ... es-397947/

Good job Rob, keep it up. I totally want to try this one out.

Sounds like people are expecting it to dry out as much as the Chico strain, but I'm guessing it's going to be closer to 1272 with less flocculation.

Perhaps the folks that were having issues with it just weren't treating it right.

I just tasted my brew from the primary (11 days) and it hit 1.010, I'm really happy about that. Now to dry hop this. (Amarillo, Falconer's Flight, Cascade if I run out of FF).

Also available as the Yeast Bay's Vermont Ale yeast: http://www.theyeastbay.com/brewers-yeas ... ermont-ale.

The Yeast Bay products are all made by White Labs and come in the same vial. 100 Billion cell count IIRC.

Ontario Beer Kegs will soon be distributing The Yeast Bay yeasts in Canada.

Looks like they've opened it up for pre-orders:

Anyone willing to let me steal a little of their stored conan? I don't need a lot, just enough to inoculate a small tube of wort.

I am going to make a starter from a fresh vial in the next day or two and could give you a mason jar post-starter if you want. Would hopefully be ready for you by the weekend.
Enjoying: Black Sheep (Dark Farmhouse with Brett)
Fermenting: NZ Pale Ale, Orval Clone, Berliner Weisse, Brett APA
Planning: Old Rasputin Clone

That would be sweet. Do you make starters with DME? I could grab a bag from noble grape as an exchange. Or I could bribe you with a couple oz of citra or orbit?

I will make the starter tonight. I wasn't expecting anything in return, but I do have a pound of galaxy hops in the freezer that would probably go well with the orbit. An ounce or two is more than enough - I'll just use it as part of a dry hop addition.

If anyone else wants some Conan yeast let me know - it is no trouble to fill a few extra mason jars. FYI the vial that I have is from The Yeast Bay (they call it Vermont Ale).
