Crash cooling outside

Post by sleepyjamie » Thu Jan 31, 2013 8:29 pm

Since my two fridges are occupied. I was thinking of crash cooling outside by putting the bucket outside for a few hours over several days.

Anyone think this would be a good/bad idea?

I've done it before with a garbage bag over it to keep out the elements.
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

I've done overnight in the summer and at about 5c I would put it out for 8 hrs at a time while I was at work for the day

I lagered my bock outside for the whole month of dec...tastes great! It was -12 when I brought it in for yeast and bottling. Was thinkin it might be an eisbock, but no such luck. Not even slushy.

My blond is sitting on my bench in my unheaded garage as we speak, been there since Wed night. I'll likely put it back in the fermentation chamber (err fridge) and set the temp to 3-4degC tonight, keg tomorrow.

I used to lager outside, in an insulated garbage bag, but I'd bring it inside when it got as cold as it's been lately. A few hours won't hurt though.
