Is there any chance you could provide more details/pictures of your electric kettle assembly? I'm looking to build mine soon and need some serious visual aides.

The definition of rancid.
These three carboys have been on the back deck for about four months due to my laziness. The smell is inhuman. I've never smelled anything so rancid in my life. Seriously, and I work in a pulp mill.

Re: Random brewing pics
Nasty stuff. I was given a 5 gallon carboy by one of my wife's relatives a while back that had that nasty rancid shit in it along with a dead mouse…Seriously considered just pitching it, but ended up using a fuck load of bleach to dissolve everything and clean it out.mr x wrote:The definition of rancid.

I've been guilty of shit like that. We won't mention that bad batch of sauerkraut that's still tucked away somewhere. I'm afraid to open it.

I hear ya. I've left them in the laundry tub for nearly as long - even filled with water and oxiclean, it starts to smell like a dead body. Actually, its not really noticeable until I dump the thing out to give it a proper cleaning.mr x wrote:The definition of rancid.

Re: Random brewing pics
I've only done 3 brews with this so far. I bought it with the plan to do 11.5 to 15 litre brews but I have done a 20l brew. The last brew was a 3.6kg grain bill mashed with ~22l of water. I used the strainer basket to lift the bag and did a mini sparge with 6l of water from the kitchen kettle. I ended up with 20-21l in the primary with an OG of 1.042 and a final bottling volume of 19l.chalmers wrote:Awesome! That's the same pot I've been using for my solo brews (thanks again Barr for the heads up on these rigs), but still haven't nailed down my technique. Can you give me an idea of the recipe you brewed for this beer? Volumes, grain weight? And how was your boil? I find I have to keep the lid 80% on for a proper boil. Not quite as powerful as I'd like it to be. But topping it up with some hot/boiling water from a kettle would help things.maltster wrote:Brewing a Simcoe IPA in the electric turkey fryer using modified BIAB w/ mini sparge.
Yeah, it's under powered, but convenient. The boil is not very vigorous and yeah I usually have the cover 80% on. I was thinking of making a heatstick (similar to what Garak was using) to help with the boil.
How has it been working out for you?

Re: Random brewing pics
Brewed up a "cascade red ale".
Hot wort hopped, 10 min and 1 min hopped (all cascade).
Then added my fresh cascade hops from my plant (about 8 cups).
Can't wait to try. The fresh hops smelled awesome.

Last night's "Crank one out before the storm" brew session, complete with headlamps and odd stares from neighbours.

Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.
