So I was just getting a stout grist ready for tomorrows brew day and I started wondering what it would taste like if I packed some of the grist into my coffee percolator and made a cup of coffee from it. So naturally I had to grind up a little batch to find out. I made a test batch consisting of 25% each of chocolate malt, roast barley, crystal 240, and honey malt. I used about four good sized tablespoons and perked a cup and a half of water through it. Man, it smelled awesome as it perked, just like at dough in on brew day! One of my kids even came out to the kitchen to see if I was brewing. I poured a cup, popped a tsp. of sugar and some cream into it and it's wonderful! Nice and strong, lots of dark-roast coffee notes but you can also taste the crystal and honey malts from the background adding a unique complexity and rounding off the bitterness of the roasted malts! I figured it was going to be really astringent but its not at all. I am actually surprised at how good it is! Gonna have to play around a little more with this...
Anyone here ever try this?

Right on, sounds great. This may be a first. Try adding some actual coffee too, lol.

Keep at it. I think you've come up with something that might be great. Coffee too for sure. Hops? keep us updated please. Would it be something you'd add Irish whisky and a spoon of sugar to and top with whipped cream?

Sounds kind of like those cold malt beverages you can buy. I think this sounds way better though haha.

I haven't had a chance to play around anymore with it but was pretty happy with the initial test. If you give it a try, post up your mix and what you thought of it!
