Leaking gas from liquid post on corny

Post by RubberToe » Sat Feb 16, 2013 4:05 pm

Hey all, here's one for ya.

I have a keg that's leaking gas from the bottom of the liquid out post where it's attached to the keg body.

Image

Has anyone had that happen?

Does anyone know how they are actually attached to the keg?

As of right now I'm thinking of putting some solder in there to fix it.

You could use JB weld as well but the solder should work
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

If you end up trying to solder, have you soldered stainless before?
I've been soldering the fittings onto my keggles, I didn't have any luck with most fluxes you can get around here (don't even bother with paste fluxes). I ended up biting the bullet and getting what everyone on HBT used (http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/en/P ... -Flux.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), was very easy with this flux.

FYI, YMMV.

Try relacing with all new o - rings, washed and keg lubed before you try soldering.

If it is leaking gas from the liquid post, using new O rings isn't going to solve the problem. The problem is with a leak at the point where the post joins the body of the keg. Welding or soldering is the fix.

You can get gas leaking out from under that post if the tube o-ring is bad.

Yeah it's leaking between the stainless pieces for sure.

Allan, for stainless I've only soldered a ground wire onto my keggle. I used a propane torch and plumbing flux but it got the job done. Thanks for the heads up on the difficulty, I won't bang my head against it if it doesn't work. In that case I'll hit the jbweld or epoxy.

Thanks guys.

I also replaced and lubed those rings as I though gas might be seeping down through the threads of the post. I then took the post off, covered the top of the post with my finger and pressurised the keg. As told by bubbles from the starsan I sprayed onto it it was literally leaking where the post meets the body. Wondering how it's put together there.

Welding is not the answer - you will ruin your keg.
In order to create a seal with 2 pieces of metal a rubber gasket is required.
The o-ring on the diptube is the 1st seal and the rubber o-ring on the poppit is the 2nd.
If you weld you'll regret it.

I think he meant that the male thread side of the post is welded onto the keg body. That is what I need to repair. The o rings have nothing to do with it.

Thanks.

BTW soldering failed miserably with this flux.

My flux is in Enfield, but if your not in a rush I could probably bring it back to my place (Dartmouth) eventually if you wanted to borrow it sometime.

Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know. I think I'll take the low tech route and try some epoxy on the outside. I also have a mess of soot to clean up now.

FYI, I found Bar Keepers Friend great for cleaning up soot/burnt flux/etc after soldering.

If you can, get a product number from that flux. I might look into a local supplier.

I can check the bottle, but I think all the info is here:
http://www.harrisproductsgroup.com/en/P ... -Flux.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I got a 16oz bottle off ebay (~$16 shipped IIRC), considering how long this will probably last I'd say you'd be better off just ordering it online and splitting it up.

I may have a better source than ebay.

That'd be good, see if they have the small kit's. As that would be more then enough for most homebrewers.
