Homemade Mash Paddle

Post by RubberToe » Tue Feb 21, 2012 9:54 pm

Hey guys I made a small 21 inch mash paddle for my stovetop setup:

It's made from a piece of 1x4 maple I got from Home Depot ($13 for 4 feet). I drew it with a pencil, cut it with a jigsaw, hole saws, and did lots of sanding. I still have some sanging left to do with a finer grit. I spent a bit of time on it, more than I anticipated. I'm going to make a longer one for my e-brewery.

It could double as a glass holder for when you serve the finished product.

The only glasses that would fit are samplers! :spilly:

Yeah, that really caught my eye, too. I have two nice paddles, but that has me wanting to drill holes in them :-)

At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter. :wtf:

Woah, I guess I got my money's worth. Maybe I'll go fancier with the holes for the next one.

Nope, it's not wet for very long and holding up great. I give it a good rinse when I'm cleaning up. It it were an issue I'd rub it with some mineral oil as that's what people use for cuttin boards. I've heard of people using it on their wooden mash paddle as well.

I've also heard of people using beeswax for cutting board... wouldn't hurt the paddle if you were making mead

what kind of paint would you recommend using if I wanted to paint "FAH-Q" or "SOUL POLE" on my paddle

Chalmers will give a mash paddle to the person who gives the correct movie reference

I wouldn't use paint or stain but burn it in instead.

Sorry boys Chalmers isn't in this province right now so those contest rule weren't valid at the time of said contest :spilly:
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.
