I started Some Mt. Hood this year and they have barely grown 3 feet. While some brewers gold that I started at the same time has grown over 9 ft. Do Mt. Hoods need some thing special?

Mine took a bit of a beating too. But not catastrophic.

Getting close to harvesting my cascade hops!
I am trying to plan a future recipe. Any guesses how much these will add up to? Maybe get 3oz once they are dry?

Is there much smell to these plants or are they pretty neutral until they get put into pellets? I'm trying to get permission from the warden to cover our chain link fence with hops.

Re: Hop shoots are up 2014!!
My 2014 harvest. A total of 705g wet hops, cadcade, goldings, fuggles. They'll all be going into a brew tomorrow. I'm not sure of the recipe yet... Last year I did an imperial ESB with a friend's mystery hops that turned out pretty good. I'll do something different this year.
I have half a mind to change my altbier into a harvest wet hopped sticke alt. They aren't noble hops though. Would that be crazy?

I've gotten ¾ lb. of dried hops so far. 4oz of Centennial and 8oz of Columbus. Still have to harvest my Cascade and Galena.

Give the cones a squeeze, if they don't pop back to shape completely, they're probably ready. Also, if they feel papery.CorneliusAlphonse wrote:Do you wait till the leaves really open up before harvesting? Going to harvest and brew tomorrow with a friend hops.

Re: Hop shoots are up 2014!!
Spread the leaves apart on the cones too and look at the lupulin glands inside. If it still bright yellow they are not ready. The lupulin will darken to more of a golden color when they are ready. Keep an eye on them every couple of days, you don't want the lupulin to start turning brown or they are no good anymore. Some people say another tell tale sign is when you start getting browning on the tips of the leaves but with the weather cooling down the way it is, you probably won't see that this year.

Re: Hop shoots are up 2014!!
Matt is right on with the timing based on the color of the lupulin, but there is one more thing to consider when you are thinking of harvesting. If you wait, then your essential oil levels actually increase, the alpha levels peak before the oil levels. You are better off taking your time and waiting to harvest rather than jumping the gun and ending up with lawn clippings. Our centennials and nuggets were close as of yesterday, but we are going to wait until early next week so that we max out on the oil.

Re: Hop shoots are up 2014!!
My plants are all first year so I didn't expect to get anything from them but they did really well and all produced some hops! I pulled around 600g of wet cones off my cascade plant Friday. Dried them until this morning and got 100g dry (photo below). Loved how they made the whole room smell wonderful as they dried! So far I got 70g each of magnum and EKG and about 40g of fuggles. I still have my saaz (not much on that one) and my crystal plant to go. The crystal plant has about the same amount as my cascade plant did. Pretty excited to get something from these first year plants!
This is my setup pictured earlier in the summer:
