Re: Vision Kamado Owners Thread - Available @ Costco
Thanks Derek. I've been wanting to make the switch to MAP as well so it looks like I'll need to me a visit to CT tomorrow. Did you purchase the igniter from CT as well?

Picked this up today. What's your thoughts on the electric starter? Should I use this or buy the map people are talking about?

Torch has 'er lit in 30 Seconds or so. No cords, no worries on where to drop the electric starter, and gives better control over how much lump you light up. Important for low and slow.

ok sounds good. one of the issues im having is making sure the heat is evenly distributed. i was a bit worried the electric starter wouldn't be able to get at the full surface area of the bottom.LeafMan66_67 wrote:Torch has 'er lit in 30 Seconds or so. It can be a bit of a fool's game to figure out where the firebed will go. I just hit the top in two places. You don't need to be digging into the bottom AFAIAC.

I started off using an electric starter and I can't say I found it slow at all. HOWEVER... after about 2 months, the thing went nuclear and incinerated itself. For that reason I switched to a torch.

Came out pretty good. Bottom was a bit crunchy. Maybe use a heat deflector next time. Took forever to heat up the grill. I'm still a noob. In obviously not using enough charcoal. Had a hard time getting past 450f

Way to go man, looks good. Pizza is a bit of a learning curve. Also, when I had trouble heating up it was time to clean the ashes out.
Just make more pizzas and you will be a pro.

You are using lump now right? Briquettes won't cut it for high temp. And did you go directly on the grates with the crust?

Yeah briquettes took it to around 450f
I put the pizza stone on the second rack.
I found a BBQ store that sells all kinds of charcoal that I'm going to check out.

Costco out here sells lump from Basque at a great price. Royal Oak at CT is a reasonable price too. If you have Lowes out there, check there too.

They have big green egg and a few other brands here. 20 lb sacks I think for around $16

Not unreasonable, but watch for sales and stock up if you have space.

I generally prefer it pretty rare. Oil it up a bit, and grill it a few minutes per side (depending on thickness) on high heat.
