Gahan House opening in Halifax
Saw a tweet this morning that the Gahan House are expanding to the Halifax waterfront. I assume they might be moving into teh old H&T?

Looks like they're hiring everyone but a brewmaster.

Either that or they have recruited someone already.

Or they're doing the brewing on the Island and fermenting on premises. No on-site brewmaster required.

I think a smart business venture would try to recruit Greg. That's my wild guess.

Not planning on bringing any of the brewing crew here over as of right now. Could change, though, as it's all coming together pretty quickly. There'll be the "regular" brews, plus special ones made there that we don't have over here.

As someone who works downtown and loves the 1772, this is great news. Stillwell doesn't open until 4

Re: Gahan House opening in Halifax
Just throwing this out there for folks, to confirm that the folks at Gahan are indeed opening up in the old Hart & Thistle. I think they should do really well there. A few more details on my page:

Re: Gahan House opening in Halifax
Something from Gahan on cbc radio 1 shortly regarding the new operation. I hope they keep the old Keith's table....
"...more of a focus on year round service, not just the tourist season..."
Well, I think that was the goal of most businesses down there, can these guys do it? Time will tell....
Opening in the fall - not the greatest timing, but it will certainly test their theory of 'great service, great food, and a cool atmosphere' to keep locals around in off tourist seasons. That was a quote from the waterfront PR I think. I hope so, because there's something missing if it was from Gahan, lol....

Re: Gahan House opening in Halifax
Perhaps they can make it work year round—they've got lots of experience with that at their location in Charlottetown. I'd say if they can't make it work, it would be a hard slog for anyone, really.

And that's the persistent question. There are some buildings people consider dead zones in hfx, that good people could not make work in the long run. Gahan certainly has experience, but Bruce did too. They are part of the Murphy group - that helps a lot.
Shall we set the five year clock and hope for the best?

Personally, not having to walk uphill is a great promotional feature. But there's no shortage of food and rotating taps uphill. Like X said, set the clock and let's see.

That whole waterfront area is being rebuilt after 3 more summers. $125 million redevelopment (from the horses mouth). So they're there for 3.5 yrs.

Re: Gahan House opening in Halifax
If they are smart about it and use the location to their advantage they should do just fine. The issue with the Hart & Thistle was they didn't have anything to bring people in to the bar/resto in the winter. Gahan seems to drive people from Charlottetown through their doors in the winter, so I am hoping the same will play out here in Halifax.
I would honestly love to see them challange the Lower Deck for a decent live music venue on weekends. The building is large enough to have something like that, and they have a nice big outside area to for an outdoor stage in the summer.
What redevelopment are you referring to? I didn't think there were any big changes in order for historic properties and the surrounding areas. I know down by Salter St and the Maritime Museum there are some big changes coming.

Personally I see a brewpub with a canning or bottling line working good in that location. The side room would easily be converted into a small canning line. Would open up year round revenue from NSLC sales.

According to AllNS the PEI Brewing Company's Charlottetown brewery can do 30,000hL/year. Wouldn't that put them at 50% larger than Propeller and Garrison's new spots? That's impressive.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

Quite impressive but makes sense given that they're shipping to Western Canada now as well as Ontario, I believe.
