Re: Boxing Rock Brewery Opening in Shelburne
Maybe, but don't we all brew a craft gateway beer for guests that come and who's palates are trained for commercial beer? It's better than having people sitting around looking miserable and pretending they like your beer. I try to make mine so that I can drink it too (took one to Hoptoberfest and didn't get screamed at any way). Once they've had a few, then you can start pouring them some more adventurous beers I find. I like that term "craft gateway beer", haven't heard it before, and I think it's a good idea to give people training wheels.

I really liked their red. It inspired me to brew my own cascade red. Made with the cascade I grew this year.

Re: Boxing Rock Brewery Opening in Shelburne
There isn't much I enjoy more than converting a light lager drinking friend and it never happens by serving a IPA or stout first. One of the best compliments I've gotten recently was from a friend who said I ruined him because he no longer can finish a bottle of schooner (former favorite beer). I think the gateway craft beer is smart for business and it helps to further this craft beer movement. It's possible to brew a more approachable beer without it being a coors light clone. Palates can change but they change in baby steps.GuingesRock wrote:Maybe, but don't we all brew a craft gateway beer for guests that come and who's palates are trained for commercial beer? I do believe the very fact that BR has bottles in Dooly's proves that they are targeting the masses. Maybe the brewer isn't but someone there is. I can't imagine basing a business plan dependent on NS drinkers who already love DIPA.

What’s the chance of marketing DIPA’s to young NS males trying to be macho, different, cool. The names of commercial DIPAs, and the bottle labels, seem to be targeting that group. What are those boys drinking at the moment...it can't be Coors or Bud...surely!Barr wrote:I can't imagine basing a business plan dependent on NS drinkers who already love DIPA.

Anyone been drinking the Temptation Red recently? The past two or three 6-packs that I've had have been undercarbed, no head, and definitely not as clear (not that I care about clarity - just something I've noticed).

I had a 6-pack that was purchased fairly recently... definitely not undercarbed, and clarity was great, too. Flavor and aroma were very good, as well.Jimmy wrote:Anyone been drinking the Temptation Red recently? Good. I'm hoping it was just this most recent batch that the corner store down my way had in stock. I'll be buying some more this week and will see how it is.

Re: Boxing Rock Brewery Opening in Shelburne
Brewery doubles down on IPA

Among the South Shore breweries that are establishing themselves as leaders of the artisanal beer movement is Shelburne’s own Boxing Rock Brewing Company.
The two-year-old business is gaining a reputation among local beer aficionados for its impressively fragrant brews.
One of its flagship brands is Vicar’s Cross – a Double IPA. The ‘double,’ in essence, means the beer has double the hops and more alcohol than a traditional IPA (India Pale Ale).
Other Nova Scotia brewers – notably Garrison – utilize the term Imperial IPA to describe the style.
Bowing Rock’s version, which is now widely available at many NSLC stores, carries both its extra hop expression and alcohol gracefully (it registers at 8.5 per cent).
The nose is rich in grassy hops and body both full and clean. The finish, while characteristically bitter, is well-balanced with hardly a trace of the beer’s lofty alcohol levels coming through.
This beer style was originally created to serve British troops stationed in India in the 19th century, as the extra hops and alcohol acted as preservative for the beer’s long journey from England to India.
Not surprisingly, the beer has an affinity for exotically-spiced cuisine. The rich aroma and flavour profile of the beer matches the powerful flavours afforded by classic Indian ingredients.
Our version of ‘Curried Lamb Meatballs,’ inspired by the Vicar’s Cross Double IPA, was made using Suneetra’s Curry Powder – a new Halifax-based company that offers its own blend of traditional Indian spices.
Curried lamb meatballs (approximately 18 meatballs)
Ingredients:
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 apple, peeled, cored and finely chopped
2 tbsp curry powder*
4 tbsp Boxing Rock Vicar’s Cross Double IPA
1 lb ground Nova Scotia lamb
1/4 cup loosely packed fresh mint, chopped
Salt & pepper
Directions:
Preheat an oven to 400 F. Place a large pan over medium-low heat and add the oil and chopped onion.
Sauté until onion becomes translucent. Add the curry powder, apple and beer.
Cook until the apples are soft; let cool. When the onion and apple mixture is cool transfer to a bowl with the ground lamb and mint; mix thoroughly and season with salt and pepper.
Form into meatballs. Place a non-stick pan over medium-low heat and brown the lamb meatballs on all sides.
Transfer the meatballs to a baking sheet and bake in the oven for approximately eight minutes.
Remove from oven, insert toothpicks and serve as an appetizer.
*We used Suneetra’s Curry powder, a locally-crafted blend of anise seed, asafetida, black mustard seeds, black pepper, chili, cinnamon, clove, coriander, cumin, fennel, fenugreek, ginger and oregano.
To learn more about blend and where it is available, go their Facebook site: http://www.facebook.com/suneetrascurry" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
At Alexander Keith's we follow the recipes first developed by the great brewmaster to the absolute letter.

Re: Boxing Rock Brewery Opening in Shelburne
I've been really enjoying Boxing Rock. Their Temptation Red Ale has been my go to for a while. I just noticed last weekend, however, that it was $13.99 a six pack. Did the price increase or did I just never notice? (As an aside, I really don't like the $14-ish price point that the NSLC seems to be bringing in all their new craft and craft-like bber at, e.g., the Keith's and Moosehead versions. If that extra cash were actually going to the breweries, it would be one thing, but the NSLC mark up is pretty brutal, if I remember correctly. It seems that they're almost consciously pricing craft beers out of the range of mainstream beer drinkers.)

They aren't just pricing craft beer drinkers out of the market - most of the macro is around 24$/12.

Re: Boxing Rock Brewery Opening in Shelburne
I probably should have read this thread first but I tried a bottle of the Vicar's Cross tonight and wasn't impressed. Counter to some earlier posts, I actually found it very light in body for an IIPA which made it feel overly dry. I normally love IPAs/IIPAs but I actually struggled to finish this one off. The balance just wasn't right. Perhaps they have considered some earlier feedback and have over-corrected... I dunno.
Can't recommend it in good conscience. I haven't tried the red or pale ale, but I'm a bit leery now because I'd have to buy a sixer.

Interesting. That dryness is one of the reasons why I like their IIPA so much. I find it really lets the hops come out. To each his own I guess.
