Hi all - I attended the event (with Becky) last night. It was a great turn out and it was nice to see other ladies enjoying craft beer and I hope that it will spark their interest into the wonderful world of beer!!

Initially, when I saw the facebook group I immediately thought about how I have never felt excluded from the beer scene. Sure, I've only been exposed to craft beer and homebrewing over the past few years but I've never separated women from beer...lol.
mr x wrote:I'm not sure who them is, but i take issue with this statement (to a certain extent):
“A lot of groups that exist like this already in the city, they’re more connoisseurs of beer,” she adds. “So along with that you get a lot of sort of competition within the ranks. It’s not really an environment that’s friendly for people who are trying to learn about these sorts of things.
As for this statement, we did come across this vibe last night. Becky and I encouraged that people be need to be open-minded. We explained that even if you're not interested in becoming a beer connoisseur, Brewnosers is a group with a wealth of information on homebrewing and general beer info. I think it would be a shame to try and separate that from the Ladies group. Shouldn't we be hoping for some lady homebrewers as well as lady beer drinkers?

Anyhoo, I'm hoping to attend the next event!

I find this interesting, as other than the girls I mentioned above, who would know firsthand what goes on to say that?

Realistically though, it's pretty much impossible to run that many girls through somebody's house in addition to the regulars, so it's probably just as well in that sense that the girls do their own thing in a commercial setting. And there are obvious reasons why 'going out with the girls' is more acceptable with a significant other than 'going drinking with a house full of guys'. Unless you are a lesbian.

This thing just keeps growing heads doesn't it...

Alli-hop. A woman after my heart. Brew beer, drink beer, love beer and above all use lots of hops....lots, think a bale per batch. Im joking. But yeah whats next a black homebrewers group? Or a jewish group? Seems a bit dubious and a wee bit circle jerkish to define a group by a very limited demographic. I cant wait for the quadriplegic, lesbian mexican twin spirited brew group Ill definately attend that one. But Im a dick so what do I know.....

Thanks jimmy! Lol

Other than the few moments of "standing up for brewnosers", it was a good event. I am hopeful that the league will just be a place for ladies to get together and enjoy beer. Some may take the opportunity to learn all about it and others may just choose to taste and socialize. I think that was their vision and it is unfortunate that there was a negative vibe sent our way. Either way, as someone mentioned in an earlier post, anyone who get serious about brewing/beer will likely find themselves surfing this forum ;)

Just a heads up, the LBL is having their second event on July 11th. It is at Wooden Monkey Dartmouth, and will feature Big Spruce. $15 gets you two slices of pizza and samples of their 3 beers (including their Regatta Red, not available out of Cape Breton). There are about 30 tickets (of 75) left.

There has definitely been some misogyny on this forum, which could be why some women consider the group to not be welcoming.

I may be stretching it by saying outright misogyny, but posts that most women I know wouldn't want to be reading are a dime a dozen. Here's a good starting point.

That thread looks like a bit of a C.O.C.K. up. I wonder if it should be wiped off. I’d hate any part of me being compared to Coors Light Iced Tea. That would be really derogatory. Do that to an entire gender and you might have some trouble on your hands. At least pick a nice beer.

And there's a lot of women who would blow that thread off or laugh at it outright. Even sesame Street handles topics that some segment of the population doesn't like.

You're a long way from a dozen afaiac.

Is it your argument that contention is a good thing and serves the site and its community well? Well yes! it does, but not when it is of a personal nature.

Life is a bit too short, and anything vaguely personally offensive, doesn’t serve the offended person/people, and therefore doesn’t serve the community as a whole.

You can argue that someone “shouldn’t” take offence. But generally I find that word “shouldn’t” abhorrent when used in that kind of context.

If something does end up causing offence to anyone at all, then it is easier and kinder to delete it. But it’s not my site, and I know I have the option to bugger off if I don’t like it.

If we deleted 'everything' that 'anybody' took offense to.. we likely wouldn't have very many posts. Life isn't perfect.. freedom of speech, blah blah. The Brewnoser forum is a hugely welcoming forum as a whole. I'm sure the women visiting see that. We aren't scaring them away by any means. If they came out to an event, they'd confirm their assumption that we're a great bunch of guys AND girls!

Freedom of speech and won’t be deleted! I’d write about Coors light penises (sounds a bit limp I know) but not interested in penises. Suppose a whole lot of women came on here and wrote about Coors Light penises. At some level, it shows an interest in women, mixed with a bit of confusion about them. I was a bit embarrassed reading that thread to think that women were having to read it, but as Mr. X says they are probably used to it, and laugh their heads off at us.

IMO the Ladies Beer League is more along the lines of them getting out and enjoying craft beer with other gals without the pressure of a bunch of drunk guys hitting on them.

Should that be “pathetic drunk guys”. People often enjoy being admired, but not as many enjoy being objectified. People need to be able to relax, have fun and enjoy a hobby, without feeling excluded.

Sandy. No change required.

I saw that. Also, they're holding a Beer Hunter viewing on March 25th, at Lion & Bright. Should be a good time.

Was reading the site. This looks great! :rockin:
About LBL

The Ladies Beer League (LBL) was established in Summer 2013 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. LBL is a social club, targeting, but not exclusive to, women, dedicated to the promotion and responsible consumption of local craft beer. We encourage the education of craft beer, support the home brewing community, encourage women to work in the craft beer industry, and aim to help grow the cask beer movement in NS.

The LBL seeks to break stereotypes about women and beer by providing a comfortable space for women to socialize and learn from one another. We’re not about segregating genders, but instead are trying to make the beer community more equally represented between men and women.

Through our social media sites, we aim to provide our members and the public with information regarding local pubs/bars, events, brewpubs and craft breweries. We love sharing interesting beer-related information to foster further education regarding the brewing and beer industry.

LBL is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors. Memberships will be open to the public shortly but will include discounts & deals at participating sponsors. Stay tuned for more information!

Do you have an event idea for us or want to host the LBL in your establishment, get in touch!
