Awesome beer selection in Bangor, ME

Post by moxie » Thu Dec 16, 2010 8:49 pm

If you are travelling down to/through Maine, mark Hogan Road Deli and Convenience down on your map... It's a gas station/diner type place which for some reason has an awesome selection of beers from all over the place. One of the best beer selections I have ever seen. It's in Bangor, ME, right off the 95 on the Hogan Rd. exit.

Yup, have been there a few times. Great selection, I love that you can buy Cantillon at a gas station. FWIW their prices are generally quite a bit higher than places not that far away if you're spending any kind of time in that part of the states.

Agreed, some of the prices are a bit steep, but I'll pay it to get everything I am looking for in one place. I am down there once a month or so, never been disappointed. The owner is a good guy as well. Last time down I picked up several choices from Rogue, Dead Guy, Arrogant Bastard (And Oaked Bastard) Great Lakes' Christmas Ale, Allagash Tripel & Interlude, several from Dogfish Head, and some miscellaneous others that I can't think of off the top of my head. Always found something special in there!

Digging up an old thread...

My Mom is going to Bangor this weekend and offered to bring me back some beer. I'm not going to put her out too much but she asked where she should go for them. I told her most stores carry the stuff so she might not have to look too hard. I'll probably only get 6 - 12 bottles and was thinking of getting some Stone and DFH mostly. Maybe some Sierra Nevada. Should I send here to this place?

Thanks,
-Rob

If you do... Send her with a specific itemized list. I went into Hogan Road Deli and spazzed out because I didn't even know where to start. Roughly 3 6-foot shelves back-to-back with American and import beers plus a fridge. I wish I had all day there to research every beer I saw.

Sounds like how I freaked out at Trader Joe's in Portland, there was maybe double that.

You can get DFH and Sierra Nevada at most grocery stores there, but for stone or something a bit more rare Hogan Rd is your best bet.

Off the top of my head for American beers I saw Stone, Lagunitas, DFH, Sierra Nevada, Green Flash, Rogue, NH and Maine breweries of course.

Definitely worth sending her there. Easy to get there off the highway and a good selection. As was mentioned, send a list with her if possible.

Thanks for reviving this. Headed to Boston in August and if the route is planned ahead of time, so much the better...

Offically duty is about $1 a bottle. I usually go for 2 days and come back with 40-50 bottles and have I never been charged more than $10

We'll be heading for Katahdin next month and last year found that the ratty old IGA in Millinocket had a surprising beer selection for being, well in the middle of nowhere.

I know it's not Bangor, but... It's close.

Novare Res Bier cafe in Portland is celebrating their 6th anniversary starting on May 21st with an amazing draught line up including Cantillon! Man I wish I was going to still be here for that.
