Where to get Milk sugar and Muscovado sugar around HRM

Post by Torpedo Brewing » Mon Jun 29, 2015 3:10 pm

G'day fellow HRM homebrewers,

I've been looking for a couple ingredients around the HRM and having trouble. I'm forecasting to brew a Milk Stout and an Old Ale. For the Milk Stout (sweet stout) i'm going to obviously need the Milk sugar (lactose) and cannot find it anywhere, as well as Muscovado sugar for an Old Ale recipe, its very similar to dark brown sugar but did research and found this sugar to be an authentic original ingredient for the style of ale. Any tips would be great!

Cheers ! :cheers2:

I've seen it a Noble Grape too.

Not sure on the other. My gut says to check with Planet Organic or somewhere like that. Good luck!

Lactose is available at Noble Grape ($7.99/kg) and Everwood Avenue Brewshop ($4.99/kg).

True "muscovado" sugar may be difficult to find in town (according to Wikipedia, there's not a clear definition of exactly what makes sugar muscovado), but I'd start at Organic Earth market on Quinpool. If they don't have that, what they and probably Bulk Barn sell as "Dark Brown" sugar has enough molasses in it to get close (I know it makes a massive difference in baking, especially things like brownies). If neither of those (or other local natural food stores) can help you, Amazon lists at least three brands that say Muscovado on the label: Billington's, Cuisine Camino and Whitworth's.
