Yeast
Hey,
Beside NG, where do you get your yeast? I'm looking to get a couple of different strains (a decent lager and a scottish ale) and I assume someone here has a decent online source. Thanks
Anyone here rinsing and storing yeast long term?

Re: Yeast
I buy all my yeast online from 3 different retailers:
* http://ihomebrewing.ca/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
* http://homebrew-supplies.ca/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
* http://www.homebrewgearcanada.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Though word of warning, I've been having some issues with HomebrewGearCanada being pretty flakey on their shipping times the last couple of orders. Have waited up to 2 weeks for orders to ship out (with no back ordered items). Hence this thread: http://www.brewnosers.org/forums/viewto ... ?f=3&t=622" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I started washing yeast a few batches back—have a 2nd and 3rd generation of Wyeast 1007 stored—enough to do about seven 5 gallon batches (with starters). I had been hoping to grab the 1318 London Ale III from my chocolate milk stout when I transferred to secondary last weekend, but I was lazy when I brewed the beer and way too much break material and trub ended up in the fermenter. So I wasn't able to salvage the yeast unfortunately.

Re: Yeast
I get my liquid yeast from NG, and I order a ration of dry yeast (US-05 and Nottingham) whenever I get miscellaneous parts online (provided they sell yeast.)
A friend of mine set me up with some vials for yeast ranching, so I am reading into that a little bit. I don't think I will start doing it any time soon, but I have a pretty strong interest to get into it. Those activator packs aren't cheap! I would also like to keep strains of "specialty" yeasts going... Pacman, etc.
I prefer Wyeast over WL. I don't use a stir plate or anything.
Anybody pitched Pacman??

Re: Yeast
I personally think NG is the best resource in Hfx for yeast. I don't think you'll get it any cheaper online. I wash my yeast, and use it for many generations, up to 7 for one strain. Usually my limit is boredom, not bad beer. Using it that many times makes it a pretty good deal IMHO.Fishdisease wrote:Hey,

Re: Yeast
Does anyone in town carry White Labs yeast products? I'm really interested in getting the WLP400 Witbier strain for an upcoming brew. I know I can get the WYeast Forbidden Fruit at NG, but I was hoping to try something different.

Re: Yeast
Nobody I know of carries WL in Nova Scotia. I think there are online guys in Canada who do though. Check the suppliers thread.

Re: Yeast
Yeah, homebrew-supplies.ca carries White Labs stuff, but the shipping cost for yeast is too much, I'll just pick up a Forbidden Fruit from NG for this batch (this is for a friends wedding) and order a Belgium Witbier (3944) for the next one.

I just picked a couple packages up in Bangor: http://www.centralstreetfarmhouse.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jeffsmith wrote:I've been dying to get my hands on some Pacman, but it's not the easiest to come by since it disappeared from the seasonal offering.
Great little store. They have the full line of White Labs yeast, so I picked up a couple of those too.

Re: Yeast
If you're ever interested in trading some harvested Yeast, definitely let me know. I've got some 1007 German Ale and 1332 Northwest Ale here.RobD wrote:I just picked a couple packages up in Bangor: http://www.centralstreetfarmhouse.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;jeffsmith wrote:I've been dying to get my hands on some Pacman, but it's not the easiest to come by since it disappeared from the seasonal offering.

Re: Yeast
While in Maine last week I couldn't remember the name of this place (and was staying off grid) so I described it to some knowledgeable locals who were sure they knew the place I was talking about. They were wrong but took me to Natural Living Center in Bangor. The web site doesn't even mention brewing supplies or equipment, but the back corner of the store blows N.G. away with its selection and prices. Among other things, I got some yeasts from Wyeast (Rogue Pacman Ale) and White Labs (Burton Ale, California Ale V, Belgian Saison I Ale, and Oktoberfest/Märzen Lager). As always I'm willing to trade samples (Forbidden Fruit, anyone?).RobD wrote:I just picked a couple packages up in Bangor: http://www.centralstreetfarmhouse.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Unlike N.G. and health food stores here, Natural Living Center also has an awesome selection of actual beer. It's definitely worth a stop if you're near Bangor.

Re: Yeast
I have a smack pack of forbidden fruit, tho' I don't know when I'm gonna get a chance to brew next. I've got some yeast I need to pick up at NG - if I can make it soon, maybe I'll make a starter for the FF, decant and bring you half the slurry.
Plus I still owe you the old ale blend.

Re: Yeast
Kyle, I've got a slurry of Forbidden Fruit you can use. I haven't done anything besides harvest and stick it in my fridge. Thoughts on its next step?
When I get to brewing a hefe, I'll be sure to grab some of the Weihenstephan yeast.

Re: Yeast
I'm still waiting for my turn with the yeast book so I can't offer any expert advice yet. In general I've found keeping the trub refrigerated and undisturbed keeps the yeast dormant adequately for quite while.

Re: Yeast
What we have done as part of our homebrew club is to set up a yeast library so basically any liquid yeast we buy is slanted and put into storage for the club itself
Start up costs were roughly $100-$150 fridge and test tubes was well worth it as we now do not have to buy liquid yeast we just stop by grab a testube build up a starter and ready to rock and roll
if anyone is interested in setting up something like this I can get you all the info needed
we also culture yeast from Chimay and anything else that we are able to !!!
