Meander River is offering a Community Supported Beer, a pre-pay option similar to how Community Supported Agriculture works. I find this interesting, especially for a rural area with only one place to fill a growler.
Brewing right now: whatever is going on tap at Stillwell in a few weeks.

Interesting, but I don't think the money can go towards beer, can it?

Absolutely. You're pre-paying for beer. It's no different than buying yourself an NSLC gift card.

It's a little different than that. There's free money in there. I thought somebody tried this before and ran into problems on the liquor side, where food was eligible, but liquor was not, but I could be wrong.

I'm interested to see how it works out. It isn't really "free liquor", the money just isn't changing hands at the same time as the beer (ie, if you payed $120 for a 12 month subscription of one growler fill per month, you've paid $10 for each fill up. Just not at time of pickup.) Anyway yeah I don't know the legal issues around it, because alcohol laws are back asswards.
planning: beer for my cousin's wedding
Fermenting: black ipa
Conditioning:
Kegged: barrel barleywine from 2014 - i think i still have this somewhere

Heard last week through the rumor mill that the guys from Breton Brewing were in brewing with Big Spruce and should be open in Sydney this year

Duo to launch Breton Brewing Co.

SYDNEY — There will soon be another Cape Breton craft beer on the market.

Through the handy work of two young Sydney dads, the Breton Brewing Co. will open its door later this spring.

Beer lovers Bryan MacDonald and Andrew Morrow said the business follows a dream that began in their homes about five years ago.

“For me, it’s been a passion … for a while,” MacDonald said in a recent interview.

“I’ve always been into trying different types of beer. It was a hobby at first and then it turned into a real passion, and now we’re trying to take it to the next level.”

MacDonald, a trained engineer, said he recently completed some training with Big Spruce Brewing in Nyanza, which launched itself as Cape Breton’s first craft beer company in 2013.

Breton Brewing is now in the process of finalizing its recipes and has secured a 5,000 square-foot building on Keltic Drive in Sydney River, located across from the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market. The firm will offer brewery tours and a tasting area for visitors who wish to a grab a pint or fill growlers.

MacDonald said they also plan to sell their beer at select restaurants across the province, starting in the Sydney area.

MacDonald and Morrow said there a number of reasons why the craft beer industry continues to grow in Nova Scotia.

“I think the biggest thing that makes people enjoy and purchase craft beer over the mainstream beer is … it’s somewhat local,” MacDonald said. “You know who made the beer and you can picture the brewer and the brewery.

“So it’s just that feeling of drinking local and supporting local — on top of that — it’s just a lot more flavour and natural ingredients that go into craft beer versus the mainstream beers.”

Morrow, a school teacher, said he feels fortunate to be able to raise a family in Cape Breton.

“We’re really lucky to be able to start something and stay here because there’s been so many people having to move away for work, and to be able to raise our families here is a big plus, so it’s exciting,” he said.

Breton Brewing plans to give its beer a special edge by using a less common step-mashing method for its all-grain batches and will purify its water using reverse osmosis.

I work above the new Nine Locks location and it smells like they've been brewing the last couple days.
