Newbie alert; what's up with these bubbles?

Post by TimG » Fri Aug 05, 2011 6:59 am

Kegged a batch last night, had been sitting in my spare room in the secondary for a while now (3 weeks or more) and it isnt' exactly 'cool' in there (not roasting hot either).

These bubbles are new to me. Anything I need to be worried about (went ahead and kegged anyways).

That looks somewhat like an infection to me, but lots of things do. If it tastes OK, get it cooled and on tap. :cheers2:

My thoughts too. I've seen something like that on a couple of my first few batches. If it tastes ok, then great, but it will go downhill fairly quickly - drink up!

Well, it's hard to tell for sure, as I've seen weird stuff on my beer before. What catches my eye is the 'iceberg' texture and the surface of the bubbles. But your taste will tell all, don't assume it's bad unless it tastes bad!

What kind of yeast was it?
"Twenty years ago — a time, by the way, that hops such as Simcoe and Citra were already being developed, but weren’t about to find immediate popularity — there wasn’t a brewer on earth who would have gone to the annual Hop Growers of American convention and said, “I’m going to have a beer that we make 4,000 barrels of, one time a year. It flies off the shelf at damn near $20 a six-pack, and you know what it smells like? It smells like your cat ate your weed and then pissed in the Christmas tree.” - Bell’s Brewery Director of Operations John Mallet on the scent of their popular Hopslam.

Had a quick taste today.. (flat), I don't know.. I mean it isn't great tasting, but the last batch I made with this 'no name red ale kit' I had around wasn't great either. Sweet tasting, but I used no corn sugar this time (tiny bit last time). I thought it fermented pretty good but could have finished high (can't seem to find my notes). It doesn't taste skunky or sour or.. what am I looking for here? :spilly:

If it isn't sour or funky tasting, I'm betting it's alright. But I think that getting it cold and on tap ASAP will help keep things in check in the case that there is some bugs in there.

When I've seen my carboy like that, it was OK fresh (maybe even good), but it did not age well. Bottles that were left after 3 month were gushers. Someone on another forum referred to it as a 'latent infection'

Ok, well it is on tap.. though may not go down all that fast unless the sweetness goes away with carbonation. I'll just drink it till it seems to taste crappy then dump it, no harm (it was a free kit anyways.. though might waste a bit of DME and hops if I end up dumping it).

Thanks guys

That board doesn't mean anything to me! Honest! And it was before I ever met this one ...
