What to do...

Post by jhennigar » Sun Feb 16, 2014 12:59 pm

I have been trying to find time to do my first all grain batch for weeks. I made time to do it today, but now the weather is shit. I have my water heating now, but I'm debating shutting it all down due to the gusting winds and increasingly cold temperature. Any advice? Will the elements throw things off? I'm brewing on my porch, very little wind protecting... Any advice is appreciated!

Jeff

15 gallon brew kettle and dark side burner, both from Everwood. I'll be using a Coleman extreme cooler if I get that far.

Mashtun will be OK. Not sure what a dark side burner is - btus? There is a wicked wind out there, might be too much if you don't have a shield.

5 gal batch? You can always try to do it on the stove, will take a bit longer, but might be better, especially if the wind starts to pick up more.

Here is what I do when it is crappy out

Fermenting: Oud bruin/Vienna Pekko SMaSH
On tap: Nelson dry hopped Berliner/ Scottish Heavy 70-/ NE IPA

I think you're better off to wait this one out...that burner sounds a bit low for a day like today with no shield.

I think deep down I knew that all along, I just didn't want to admit it.. haha

Thanks for the input all.

I also made a yeast starter for the first time... Guess I'll have to salvage that for a week as well.

find yourself a ghetto wind blocker...we brewed 4 (5gal) batches on Sat evening...only needed the wind blocker for one batch...wind was pushing the flame on the burner

Brewing in the winter is less fun than fair weather brewing for sure...but we need beer
