WTB: Calypso Hops
Hey,
I'm looking to brew a unique IPA using Galaxy, Calypso, and Warrior hops. Anyone know where I can purchase Calypso hops, or does anyone have any for sale? I can't seem to find these local or at any online stores in Canada.

I'd also settle for Belma as a potential substitute.

That hop looks interesting. I can't find any in Canada either. It might be worth putting in a hop order to the states: http://www.hopsdirect.com/search.php?se ... &x=30&y=16" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Belma sounds great too. Did you read the reviews here (scroll down): http://www.hopsdirect.com/belma-pellets/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Looks like they would be much cheaper from there too.

If we ordered 5# of Belma It's be about $16 a pound shipped from hops direct. I'd be interested in a pound.

I'd be interested in doing a hop group buy to cut down on costs. What's the best means to track these?

Belma sounds like a pretty interesting hop.
I recently made a pale ale with Legacy from hops direct and the beer smells and tastes like blackcurrants, I really liked it, so I added a large late addition of it to my IIPA recipe, will be interesting to see how the blackcurrant mixes with the tangerine from amarillo and dankness from columbus.

I just priced out shipping, it's through the roof. According to the site it's 44.10 for 3lbs of hops. I'll need to do without or find something cheaper.

I wonder how much a plane ticket down there to pick up hops would cost.Keith wrote:I just priced out shipping, it's through the roof. According to the site it's 44.10 for 3lbs of hops. I'll need to do without or find something cheaper.
Edit: Oh it's on the USA west coast. wouldn't work. That's half way around the world ...almost.

Keith, I'm happy to bring the hops back. Don't bother with EMT, I'll pay Tony, and you can pay me when we see each other Tuesday at the meeting (I believe you're going?).

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
No need for money. I'll get 3 Oz to Chris and he can get me a bottle of Uncle Leo's IPA SVP.
BTW the AA of the hops I have is 17 AA, I don't think I have it written on the bag.
Thanks.

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
Tony, the beer train (Chris and Mike) arrived! Greatly appreaciated, next time Chalmers heads back I'll get an uncle leos IPA sent!
I was planning a recipe to use the Calypso hops in. What's everyone's take?
Size:
12L Boil, 23L Batch
Steeping Grains:
1kg Crystal 20 for 20 mins
Extract
4.5kg Light LME
Hops: (all Calypso)
1oz 60 min
.5oz 30 min
.5oz 20 min
.5oz 10 min
.5oz 5 min
Other:
1tsp Irish Moss @ 10 min
Yeast:
Safale US-05
Stats:
Original Gravity: 1.062
Final Gravity: 1.017
ABV: 5.82%
IBU: 51.61
SRM: 9.02

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
So, going for an all Calypso recipe. Guess you'll find out what they taste like. Did I mention they were 17 AA's... I guess I did seeing you have it figured for 51 IBU's
Looks like a yummy recipie. I really should try a smash using it if only for a 1 gallon batch just to try it out on it's own.

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
yea who knows when I'll get it next. I figure a single hop IPA with it may be ideal to get a good feel for the flavor. I'm really interested in this hop, hoping it works well!

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
May I ask why most of your hops are in the last 10 mins? I won't be brewing this right away, so am going to try and source some Belma hops to try with it. Wait and see.

Re: WTB: Calypso Hops
I'm looking for more hop flavour and aroma without too much bittering ( low ABV ) It was my first try at that hop and I wanted more of the Citra to show through.
Too bad you didn't mention the Belma, I could have sent you some of that also. I think Chris has some from the trip he took previous to this one. I have a pound I haven't opened yet. It will be my next IPA/APA
