Hops

Post by Broob » Wed Oct 23, 2013 7:44 am

This is one of those occasions when google has failed me so I'll ask here. Anyone know when some of the more popular hop varieties will be available? I'm in serious need of a bulk buy of Amarillo, simcoe, citra, cascades etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see those this year. And the way things are going, they could be in long term shortage...

The big suppliers are starting to get 2013 pellets. Shipping can be rough (although I expect Dave/OBK will likely be getting them).

I just bought some Citra/Simcoe (wanted to get some hop extract) from http://www.yakimavalleyhops.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Also checkout hopsdirect.com, while they are available (as X mentioned, I'm not sure they'll last too long)

Most distributors have been sold out of Citra, Simcoe and Amarillo since June-ish. Centennial and Cascade have been unavailable for the past few months as well. The 2013 harvest is just starting and the processed hops won't be available until sometime between December-February depending on the source and hop. The major breweries get first crack at the harvest, then they get shipped out to distributors worldwide, then those distributors ship to the smaller shops (like mine). So I don't expect to see any new hops till January-February. Any of those hops that are still available now are leftovers from the 2012 harvest.

It doesn't help that Alexander Keiths wasted a shit-ton of Cascades and Hallerteau on their one hop series of fermented ass sweat
This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

This is why I am brewing English Bitters and the like for awhile. I kind of stopped brewing them and concentrated on AIPA styles. Lots of UK hops out there to buy.

Dave, how's the Chinook supply?
Nova Prime Taproom
Tap 1: Festa Brew Scotch Ale
Tap 2:
"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Good News,

I just got word from my guy that we'll be getting his Cascade, Centennial, Amarillo and a few other in the next week or two. Add a week onto that and that's when I'll get mine. Awesome!
