In a year or two I might ask you for a Centennial & Cascade rhizome.

You bet—I have some Willamette out at my brother in law's as well if you're interested.

I am - and I have Mt. Hood and Goldings, and in a year or two I might have someplace I can plant them...

We've got some Mt. Hood planted as well along with some EK Goldings. Do you have EK or some other type?

My Goldings were bought from Left Fields in BC, similar in alpha acids as East Kent varieties, so I assume similar parentage.

I had some hop seeds that I gave to an avid gardener - if he gets any male plants I should cross them with my goldings and call them Cumberland Goldings.

Ha!

My Goldings likely came from the exact same field I would guess since mine are from Left Fields as well.

My hops are finally starting to take off, but I'm a little concerned about some insect activity I'm seeing and really hoping that I don't have spider mites.
Starting to form some hop cones (also something eating the leaves...).jpg
Anyone have any ideas what it might be? I'm seeing some wisps of webs everywhere in my backyard—seems to be everywhere in Amherst right now really. Other than that, I don't see any evidence of insects on the shoots or leaves.

Spider mites won't eat leaves that way. They get on the underside, and cause the leaf to gradually turn brownish with spots. They weave very fine webs sometimes. You can build your own food safe sprays, or use something like SM-90.

Thanks for the confirmation. Looked more like caterpillar action or something of the like, but just wanted to be sure.

Most likely slugs or mammals at this time of year. Check it at night to see if there are slugs out. Nowhere near warm enough for spider mites.

My best guess would be slugs, though I haven't seen any evidence of slugs. As for mammals, I live in town with a fenced in yard, the only thing it could possibly be would be the neighbour's cat, but the leaf in question is up way too high.

I guess all I can do is just keep watching for slugs and maybe put out a couple of slug traps.

If it's cats, the problem will eventually take care of itself.

Well, there are some tree-like things directly behind my trellis, (On opposite side of our fence) and since it's thickened up with the warm weather, it's starting to cast a shadow over my hops in the mid-afternoon. I think I am getting about 4-5 hours of direct sun per day at the moment. I want to hop the fence and chop the branches off a bit! The hops are still growing pretty well, (At least, I think they are) but I imagine with full sun they would be much taller and thicker than they are at this point. My cascade just surpassed me in height, the Willamette is coiling up a little tighter on the twine, so it's only about 3 feet high at the moment. How far off am I compared to you guys with first year rhizomes? How about guys with established root systems? Any photo updates??

So far I'm only 2 for 7. There's no rush to build a trellis yet, unfortunately.

My hops are slow starting as well. I planted 10 rhizomes this spring. The cascade were first to shoot and are approx 2-3 feet tall. The brewer's gold and centennial were floated right out of the ground after the torrential rain this spring and I had to re-plant in a drier section of the garden. They are only several inches in height and one doesn't look like it's going to sprout.

I'm 2 for 5 - the Centennial came up first, then when I left home on Tuesday, the Cascade was just starting. Still got a Goldings and two Nuggets to come.

I've had to shore up my trellis 2 or 3 times already, but its still standing (a new one is in the works for next year). Here's some pics - burrs are forming :headbang:

Look like good healthy plants. I don't have any flowers yet, but that shouldn't be long coming

Last time I checked mine I had no spurs either.
I trasnplanted all my hops at my B-I-L's place this year as I plan on moving in the next year or so. Except for 2 that I planted last year that
are up to 15 Ft high, the rest are only at about 6 to 8 ft. We had a poor start to any warm weather over this side of the gulf this year.

Finally, all kinds of spurs on my Zeus. Not holding out any hope for my Centennial, might see a bit on the Cascade.

Zeus
Image

Mt Hood - it got shredded in a wind storm, but at least I'll get something out of them.
Image

The Goldings fared even worse - the plant is only about 8' tall now with a few small cones.

wow, that's a great crop, my third year Mt Hoods are horrifying low on yield, and the Zeus almost as bad.
