Don't do it!!!

Forget about having:
-money
-kids
-a marriage
-a life
-or a job...until you have at least 1-2 post-docs under your belt. Factor that into the total time that you think your Ph.D. will take.

If you're o.k. with all of that, then give'r - you have my respect.
I disagree. I just finished a masters degree and my wife is in the middle of a Ph.D and we have money, a 3.5 month old baby boy, a wonderful marriage and fulfilling lives. Although I'm sure some people have completely different experiences, we've managed to make it work.

Former English/Poli-Sci student, current Sustainability student at Dal, working part-time for Capital Health, HSSC and one of the local brew shops.

Reading about some ENVS type professionals in here, any leads on volunteer work, etc? Was trying to find some Summer courses on sustainable construction, perhaps natural building materials, retrofitting conventional old homes to make them more efficient, etc. Would also love to learn how to build post and beam.

And aspiring brewmaster. Or is that part implied by my being here?

Moxie, check out the "Morris House Project", they are open to any support then can get and its a pretty cool project if they can pull it all off.

I'm in a new work role myself. I had enough with the government and I'm now with a small engineering design firm specializing in industrial ventilation/dust collection and explosion prevention for combustible dusts.
