Perlick 525 leak

Post by mattvincent24 » Mon May 20, 2013 1:49 pm

Oh boy, yet another brewing disaster!

My perlicks always, from time to time, drip a little. No biggie, just open and shut again and it would usually stop. But what happened a few days ago is no little drip. I came home from work to my house smelling like a brewery. I ran down stairs to find almost a full keg of APA on the floor and one of my taps leaking from #7 on the attached diagram. I took the tap apart and could find nothing wrong with any of the o-rings. I put some keg lube on both #2 o-rings and now no leak. I am however to scared to leave any of my kegs hooked up when I'm not at home. Anyone else have this issue? If so what was the fix? I have found some info online that suggests that perlick recalled some of there taps because of similar leaks and i have emailed keg connection to notify them of my issue.

yeah it was a big mess. Im lucky though because the keg wasn't completely empty, and at the speed it was leaking out, i know that it didn't sit on the laminate floor for long. Only minimal damage to the floor and baseboards.

I contacted kegconnection about this problem and they have since contacted perlick and they are sending me a new faucet. To me, this is perlick admitting to a flaw in the design or manufacturing process and therefor i think they should replace all three seeing as they were purchased at the same time and are of the same model. I emailed them explaining this and am waiting for a reply. Wish me luck.

also, perlick stated that the problem comes from over tightening item #7, thus distorting the o-ring causing the leak. If this was the case, why would they send me a new faucet and not just a new o-ring? :?

I've been having problems with one of my perlick's leaking lately too. After checking it out I found it was because #7 was too loose in my case, or o-ring not seated correctly. Hopefully I didn't tighten it down too much to compensate.

If your having trouble you should contact perlick. I just email for some help and they put a faucet in the mail the same day. Didn't even have to return the old one. I'm still working on getting the other two replaced as well.

well got my replacement today and I'm pissed. 23 dollars duty. Opened the box and its a 525ss and 525pc like the rest of my taps. Anyways, as i fight with perlick to get my 23 bucks back im trying to figure out what im going to do here. Do i replace my other two taps with the SS versions? do i replace the all the o-rings in my old taps and keep the SS for another project down the road? hmmmm. Suggestions anyone? Anyone here know of a good place to get replacement o-ring for my old taps?

thats the stupid thing about this..... I never send anything across the boarder unless it's USPS. I've been burned too many times. But in this case, perlick sent me the tap with out me even knowing! It was already in the mail before i knew what the F@#% was going on. Anyways, all said and done i got a 525SS for 23 bucks.. not a bad deal. I just don't know what to do with it. I guess i could have bigger problems...lol

sonofabitch, didn't I just pour a beer out of my 575 and blew foam out through that top gasket.

What did you do to contact them about this?

Mine leaked again too. I just finished lubing both of the #2 o-rings, hopefully it will be ok now. I was careful not to tighten #7 down hard.

I wonder if they used cheap o-rings.

Edit: Stopped wondering.

Just got a new tower from OBK with two Perkicks. One of them has a slight drip when I turn it off. Is there anything I should be doing proactively?

I just emailed kegconnection, who i purchased the faucet through. They did the rest. I didn't contact perlick directly but i did see all the email traffic. I had another one leak yesterday. Im going to buy all new o-rings as soon as I find a good place to get them. You can buy from perlick directly but they only ship UPS and shipping in not cheap. Maybe a group buy could be in order.

PS unhook that faucet from you keg if you haven't already done so because it will leak again and if your not around when it happens......

I havent found anything that stops this except for cleaning it. But yours are new so that doesnt really help. What ever you do don't put keg lube on the big o-ring. While it may stop the leak it also kills head retention. I cleaned all the of mine one day because of dripping and i put a little keg lube on all the o-rings. After pulling a couple pints i had to pulled them all apart again to remove the lube.

Jimmy how long have you had that one? Do you ever run pbw/oxyclean through it?

About a year now. I've cleaned it a few times....not as much as I should be though.

Might just be a bit of hops, etc. stuck on the seal.

Most likely. I've been running Keith's IPA through there, so it's probably jammed full of hops.

If anyone is looking for perlick parts, i am making an order through perlick so if you want something just post it in the group buy post that i started. For anyone that is interested, i am replacing parts #5 and #6 with the new style. I have one tap now that has the new style and it seems to close better.
