My First Brew - A Lesson Learned!

Post by Spence » Sat May 11, 2013 5:24 pm

So, I've been making wine for years, but didn't want to deal with the process of bottling beer, so I always passed on it. But, now that I am set up with some kegs I was excited to get going. I got a basic kit, Mexican Cerveza - Coopers, and brewed it up. I wasn't real careful the timing, kegged it a day earlier than I should have. The boys came over last night - after full carbonation, and we gave it a try. Everyone loved it (they all brought backup beer just in case - and none of it was drank). But rather than being a nice clear cerveza, it was cloudy and tasted like Rickards White! Turns out there was an infection in the beer, and I won't be able to produce the same beer again - and I learned a good lesson. I had forgot about the cleaning basics, and essentially only cleaned and didn't sanitize my equipment. I got lucky this time - and hopefully next time, the beer is really a cerveza! :rockin:

time to graduate to a better brew. Even Brewhouse is better than coopers IMO.

CHEERS and perhaps you'll join me in the making of my next brew if you want to see an AG session on the go.

Welcome to beer brewing!
While sanitation is very important, it doesn't mean your beer was necessarily infected. If you transfer it too early, or transfer over too much yeast, or don't control your fermentation temperatures well enough, even a sanitary system can give you bad beer.
Not that I want to scare or discourage you, just want you to be aware. :)

This long weekend coming, I'll be doing a brew on both Sunday and Monday as far as I know right now, weather permitting.
You are welcome to join me then... I'll let you know via PM if I do and where I am in Mt. Pearl.
