Strongbad Bitter

Post by jeffsmith » Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:31 am

Pipeline is starting to run low again, so going to brew 11 gallons of ESB before long. Hop amounts below are for a 5 gallon batch though.

Mash: 60 minutes at 152ºF
OG: 1.051
Colour: 12.5 SRM
IBU: 45

79.4 % Maris Otter
9.9 % Carastan Malt
5.0 % Aromatic Malt
5.0 % Victory Malt
0.8% Black Malt

Warrior (15.5 %)—0.75 oz (60 minutes): 33IBU
US Golding (4.5 %)—1.50 oz (20 minutes): 12IBU
US Golding (4.5 %)—3.00 oz (Flamout)

0.04oz/gallon Gypsum in boil

One carboy will get S-04, the other US-05.

Edit: Changed the bittering charge to Warrior to reduce the hop mass in the kettle a bit. Also upped the flameout addition a bit.

A One that is not cold, is scarcely a One at all.

Sure I had to Google the reference, but that beer does sound tasty.

Gonna give this one a rip tomorrow with some Danstar Windsor.

"Fill with mingled cream and amber,
I will drain that glass again.
Such hilarious visions clamber
Through the chamber of my brain -
Quaintest thoughts - queerist fancies
Come to life and fade away;
What care I how time advances?
I am drinking ale today." ~ Poe

Drinking now. That Windsor is cloudy as fuck, but nice. The Victory reaallly comes through.

Try it with US-05 or S-04 next time. It'll drop super clear. The US-05 was my favourite of the two.

This has dropped pretty clear now and it's awesome. Lots of malty English flavour going on.

Just as an aside. I just drank a Wychwood Hobgoblin and found my version of Jeff's bitter VERY close
