Sound Bar or Surround Sound?

Post by bluenose » Tue Mar 19, 2013 12:07 pm

Putting the finishing touches on the man cave, so naturally I have to start thinking about the functional aspects, like the home theatre.

I have a 51" rear projection tv that'll do me for a while yet, but no sound system. I'd like to get a surround sound system, but the rear channels would have to be wireless. Of course, the other option is a sound bar with a subwoofer, but I have no experience with them, nor do I know anyone who does.

The room is 16' x 20' and the tv will be on one 20' wall (front of sofa). The wall behind the sofa is only 1/2 of the 20' length and the other half of it is open. I understand that sound bars use the side an rear walls to bounce sound waves to approximate surround sound

Looking for some input...

The one I had wasn't bad, but, it wasn't great. I sold mine after less than 2 weeks and went back to 5.1 wired because i didn't find it worth it.

personally i would stick to 5.1. Theres nothing like 5 discrete channels. If your looking for Great gear at good prices, try peak audio's discount warehouse on robie street. thats where i get all my stuff. If you don't want wires all over your floor you can do like i did and raise you baseboards a little off your floor, run the wires underneath, and cover the gap with trim. Takes some time, but worth it in the end.

rocket fish makes a wireless rig that will change any rear surround speakers to wireless.

I have one of those and I'm pretty happy with it. Definitely beats running wires all over the place.

I've heard of people doing this, but I'd have to cross two door openings that won't have trim. I knew I should have wired for speakers when I had the chance. :(

Sounds likes everybody thinks 5.1 is the way to go. Thanks

Not sure what your situation is,but if you have laminate flooring or carpet you should be able to adjust the under lay to run the wire under the floor in the doorway.

This could work as we haven't laid the laminate yet... how do you avoid having a hump where the wires runs across?
